Manny in Florida?

Featured Replies

Everyone in Boston (Owners, Fans, Teammates) all are sick of manny. They put him on waivers a few years back they just want to get rid of him. If they can get a few guys back I can see it happening. I don't know if Hermida and Allison is enough though

Completely different times. Back then Manny still had 80mil or so left on his contract and no one was touching that. With only 7 mil left it's obviously much more affordable.

The waivers were back then, but every year since he had 60 million left they have been trying to get rid of him. Also, they know if they do not exercise the 2 year option he is going to quit on them and he basically has already so the 7 million coverage is better than worrying about 40 or even 20 if they optioned 1 year.

Now, as a point of fact I haven't read most if any of this thread and I'm way behind the curve on all of this. It wasn't until a few minutes I first really heard this new Will Carroll rumor or whatevr it is of Hermida and Allison for Manny in the car.

Here's how I look at it. Hermida hits the jackpot next year and some of the 13 arb guys have to go. Manny is only a rental, in fact he wants to go somewhere where he knows they aren't picking up his option, and can you think of a more secure place than the Marlins if you want to be a free agent at the end of the season (and I haven't even bothered to figure out what he represents in draft picks because we may just let him go) ?

...Anyways forget for a minute it's Manny. Assuming the Red Sox will pay half his remaining salary because that's why Hermida is in the deal, for $3 million through the rest of the season you get a guy who's on track to hit 30 homeruns and drive in 100 RBIs, who is batting over .300 and has an OBP of .400 (yeah I know, it's .399) and an OPS above .900.

I say hell ya, if the front office is convinced Manny comes here understanding we are trading for him to win the pennant and he's on board I say we all drive out to airport and give him a hero's welcome.

This is said by someone who has been against probably every "big move rumor" involving the Marlins in the last five years - Gurrerero, A-Rod etc., but you know what, I am so blinded by that .400 OBP I don't care what the name is on the back of the uniform, I want him. If there's anything this lineup needs it's a .400 OBP right in the middle.

Things blow through my mind like what it would do to thave a lineup of Cantu then, Uggla, then Manny. OMG! Yes, its a fantasy so no one has to feel compelled to explain to me why my little fantasy doesn't hold water because "it's just my fantasy".

Not to mention what a blow it would be to the Mets and Phillies and all of baseball for that matter. I love it :thumbup

Skip bayless of 1st and ten on espn just said it would take a Hanley Ramirez like player for the Red Sox to pull the trigger and let Manny Go.

dumbest thing I've ever heard.

From quite possibly the dumbest person you've ever seen.

Those shows ie PTI and stuff they pick sides and fight, he doesn't mean half the sh*t he says.

But stupid none the less.

The Phillies and Marlins are two of a few teams engaged in trade talks regarding embattled superstar Manny Ramirez, SI.com has learned. The Dodgers also showed interest in Ramirez, but they appear to be less involved than those other two National League teams now.

Ramirez has publicly expressed a desire to be traded, and it is believed he'd approve a deal to at least Philadelphia, and perhaps Florida and Los Angeles, as well.

Boston is shopping Ramirez but people familiar with the talks indicate there's still a decent chance Ramirez remains with the Red Sox. Boston has periodically shopped Ramirez over the last four years, ever since he revealed he wasn't completely comfortable playing there. And as in the past, Boston could decide to hold onto Ramirez.

The Red Sox identified Philly as a possible landing spot for Ramirez in recent days, following Ramirez's recent public battles with his team. But the inclusion of the low-budget Marlins in talks, first reported Tuesday on SI.com, is a stunner in that they have a baseball-low $22-million payroll. It's possible the Red Sox could agree to pay most or all of the $7 million remaining on Ramirez's $20-million 2008 salary.

Baseball Prospectus had an unnamed source who mentioned that the Marlins might consider sending a package of young outfielder Jeremy Hermida and pitching prospect Jeff Allison, a Boston-area product, to the Red Sox, but that report was unconfirmed.

If Philly wins the sweepstakes, the addition of Ramirez would give them one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball. The Phillies' offense has been struggling lately and could use a boost from the Cooperstown-bound Ramirez, who has a longstanding and friendly relationship with Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, Ramirez's hitting coach when the two were in Cleveland.

The Phillies have downplayed the possibility of acquiring Ramirez in media reports but haven't ruled it out entirely. If outfielder Pat Burrell isn't involved in the trade, one question would be whether Ramirez or Burrell could play right field for Philadelphia.

The Dodgers' interest was never a surprise in that their owner Frank McCourt has collected Red Sox since buying the team. Matt Kemp's name is believed to have come up in talks with the Dodgers.

Dealing such a productive and clutch player would be seen as a major risk, but some people in Boston believe the Red Sox may finally be at their breaking point with Ramirez, who criticized upper management a few weeks ago, then came under fire for not playing the first game of a series against the rival Yankees.

Ramirez has a no-trade clause in his Red Sox contract, and it is believed that to get Ramirez to sign off on a trade, the $20-million club option for 2009 would likely be dropped, allowing him to become a free agent at season's end. Ramirez has been unhappy with the $20-million team options in his contract for 2009 and '10.

Yeah, playing in October would just be awful for Hanley and Dan and the rest of them. All those cruises and golf junkets to cancel.

Manny to the Marlins? The idea, first reported by SI.com, is not as wacky as it sounds. The chances of the Red Sox trading Manny Ramirez remain slim, but executives from at least one rival club in touch with Boston are convinced that the Sox are intent on purging their left fielder.

Here's how a deal with the Marlins could work:

The Red Sox would pay nearly all of the approximately $7 million remaining on Ramirez's salary.

The Marlins would include Josh Willingham or Jeremy Hermida, either of whom could replace Ramirez in left field, plus a prospect.

Ramirez would waive his no-trade clause in exchange for the right to become a free agent at the end of the season.

He also would agree to decline salary arbitration when offered it by the Marlins in December, enabling the team to preserve its right to draft-pick compensation while avoiding getting crushed by Ramirez on a one-year deal.

The deal would follow the template of the one struck Tuesday by the Angels, who acquired first baseman Mark Teixeira from the Braves for first baseman Casey Kotchman and pitching prospect Stephen Marek.

Ramirez would be a two-month rental, the equivalent of Teixeira. Willingham or Hermida would be the equivalent of Kotchman, a player the Red Sox would control through his three arbitration years.

The difference is, the Marlins would have virtually no chance of signing Ramirez, and they also lack an obvious replacement for Willingham or Hermida. The Angels could either keep Teixeira or replace him with Class AAA first baseman Kendry Morales next season.

The Marlins, though, routinely think outside the box. In essence, all of their players are rentals, at least once they reach arbitration. Willingham's back issues are a concern. Then again, the condition of Ramirez's knee might also be an issue.

A deal only would make sense for the Marlins if they believed that Ramirez was healthy enough to be a significant upgrade over either outfielder they traded — and if they were satisfied that his arrival would not disrupt a clubhouse full of hungry players, many of whom have a shared history with the organization.

The Red Sox might not find a better trading partner.

The Mets say they are not interested in Ramirez. The Phillies, sources say, would take him, but only if the deal were a "giveaway" — say, outfielder Geoff Jenkins and a fringe prospect. The Red Sox could not make such a trade without hurting their team unless they acquired a slugger such as the Pirates' Jason Bay or Reds' Adam Dunn in a separate deal.

The appeal for a team trying to obtain Ramirez is that it would be getting an extremely motivated player — at least, by Manny's standards. Most rival executives, however, believe the only way the Red Sox will trade Ramirez is if they make an emotional decision — which, for them, would be out of character.

"They won't move Manny," one rival exec says. "No one is going to give them anything for him. And they know they can't win without him.

"All they have to do is put up with him for two more months. It will quiet down in a few days, there will be hugs and kisses and he'll be gone at the end season."

That is, when the Red Sox decline his $20 million option.

It's Rosenthal, so take that for what it's worth. But if the Marlins can acquire him at the price Rosenthal is saying plus be guaranteed the draft picks this deal is awesome.

Skip bayless of 1st and ten on espn just said it would take a Hanley Ramirez like player for the Red Sox to pull the trigger and let Manny Go.

We'll see if he is right soon enough. Either way, he's gone in 09 from whatever team he finishes the year up on.

Proving once again that Skip Bayless is an idiot.

:lol :lol :lol

He is just a loud mouth who doesn't belong on television, he makes no sense half the time, he just talks.

Manny to the Marlins? Could happen...

:whistle

Lol... Willingham or Hermida. Yeah right. Maybe Jacobs or Ross... but not Hammer or Hermida.

This is Manny f***ing Ramirez. You have to give up value to get value. acobs or Ross aren't going to bring back Ramirez - the Giants wouldn't even accept Jacobs for Molina. Stop dreaming.

ok... ok... It would be quite a "catch" if we did get Manny.

We would be getting the good the bad and the ugly though.

Rhodes or Manny, whose it gonna be?
