August 29, 200818 yr ESPN just blasted the Tampa Bay area for not supporting a first-place team. If this were the Marlins, we would be hearing incessantly about how typical it is of the Miami fan to not care unless it's playoff time. Maybe something happens when people move to Florida and just suddenly become stupid. Must be the water. Contract the Rays?
August 29, 200818 yr Concur. I do believe that if the Marlins were in first place and the hottest story in baseball, they would be selling tickets. That's not even taking into account that we don't have a roof, and our weather is much more...unpredictable.. than Tampa Bay. Their attendance levels right now are pathetic, and when we win, at least we show up. They really have no excuse. At least we have excuses. If they aren't going to show up when they are this good...they never will. Contract them and the Nationals, IMO.
August 29, 200818 yr :jawdrop: i...i just cant believe how bad the attendance is in tampa. i had no idea it was so low...i thought they were getting like 20-25 thousand a game....boy was i wrong. holy moly i mean they got a roof and everything. ive been to that stadium and it is absolutely amazing. wow, what is there to do in tampa? really....go to the damn ballpark....they got 81 wins!!!! i gotta tell ya, this scares me as a marlin fan...i mean if tampa has a roof and 81 wins... what says we are going to get attention all season long when the new stadium comes?

We are Miami, they are Tampa. This is the state of Miami, not Tampa. We can a support a team that wins and has a ballpark that prevents the threat of a rainout on a nightly basis.
August 29, 200818 yr For the record, in 2003, we had 2 streaks of 4 games with a sub-20K attendance. In 2003 we weren't running away with first place. I know I can't base this on anything, but I just think if we were in the situation Tampa is now, things would be this bad.
August 29, 200818 yr yea if we were honestly in 1st place for like 2 weeks or on a 6 or 7 games win streak more people would come especially at this time of the year
August 29, 200818 yr I agree with Godfather. They have absolutely no excuse not to support this team. I think what it all comes down to is people in the state of Florida (especially natives) don't really care about baseball. It's primarily a football state. Always has been, always will be. Baseball is too "complex" of a game for the idiotic people of this state to understand.
August 29, 200818 yr i agree with puma....i mean every where i go i hear more about the dolphins who won 1 game last year, then about the marlins. i hear more about college football than i hear about baseball. this place is just primary football. but like i said, hopefully when the stadium comes, people will come....and i dont mean in july and the team is either at or close to being at the top of the standings.

August 29, 200818 yr If we're doing htat, our name has to change to Florida Rays, Miami Rays, or Tampa Marlins. Florida Rays might should the best.
August 29, 200818 yr When you go to Tropicana field, you feel like you're at a carnival rather than a baseball game based on my experience. It should be better than it is now, but the stadium is one of the worst in the MLB. You just dont get the same baseball feeling when you're inside a dome. Dont forget, its Tampa Bay (St.Petersburg actually), not a major city.
August 30, 200818 yr Who cares? their in first and their getting a stadium for sure. The first is right, but the 2nd isn't. The stadium is delayed indefinitely, after the Rays withdrew their attempts at getting a referendum. Apparently the common thought among city and county leaders was that the deal was rushed. So yes, they are in 1st place, but no, they are not anywhere near to getting a new stadium "for sure".
August 30, 200818 yr Dont forget, its Tampa Bay (St.Petersburg actually), not a major city. The Tampa Bay area is actually the 19th largest metro area in the United States.
August 30, 200818 yr i went to the game last night, and it does look like one big carnival in there, with the cowbells and everything in there. okay stadium. they have the same complaints about the distance as we do here in south florida.
August 30, 200818 yr Dont forget, its Tampa Bay (St.Petersburg actually), not a major city. The Tampa Bay area is actually the 19th largest metro area in the United States. So, I suppose that means they rank 19th out of 30 in the MLB for largest metro area. They rank 26th in attendance and their franchise is ony 10 years old. Not too surprising. If this were New York, L.A., Chicago, Boston, etc., the it would be a big deal. No Tampa Bay though.

But you were saying it as though the Tampa Bay area is a small market. It's not. There are plenty of people there to support a baseball team, they just don't care.
August 30, 200818 yr Last year, the Orioles september series in Tampa Bay averaged under 10,000 people per game. And a friday game in late August against the A's had less than 10k too. The attendance last night was 21,439. Against the Orioles. Rome was not built in a day. It will still take time to win fans totally over. But they will need to rip the tarps down come playoff time. You guys remember 2003, right? Your average regular season attendance was around 16,000. In the postseason, not one game was under 60,000.
August 30, 200818 yr Contract the Rays? Marlins fans are the last people who should talk about a "lack of fan support" on part of the Rays. :mischief

August 30, 200818 yr Top 10 tv ratings, Marlins have fans. At least now Rays fans can feel our pain from the hate we get
