Bullpen takes a hit by...

Waechter going to the Royals and Rhodes to the Reds. While we all pretty much expected Rhodes not to be back, they got him for a relatively cheap 2 yr/4 million deal (which I think he deserved based on his shut-down numbers w/ the Marlins last year).

I knew Doug filed for FA, but I thought I read the Marlins had every intention of re-signing him. Looks like they got him for 1 yr/640k. Once again, totally affordable for arguably our most consistent bullpen arm last year.

I'm not sure what we were doing letting them both go.

We have a slew of incoming bullpen arms... and bullpen arms are typically volatile in that they can be VERY good one year and VERY bad the next. It's not the biggest thing in the world... a LOOGY is a luxury we pretty much can't afford and anyways... Dan Meyer or Zach Kroenke looks to take the LOOGY spot anyways (or the incumbent Tankersley or Pinto, who won't be overworked this year and therefore should be better)

Don't forget CEDA!!! This guy will make the team!

I don't mind losing Rhodes, but I think it's silly to just let Waechter & his versatility go.

I knew Dougie was gone. Can't say I care a ton. We've always managed to have a Waechter, Gardner, or even Borowski type guy. We'll be fine.

Looking at our Bullpen we have quiet a few hard throwing Righties in our pen(Lindy Tucker Ceda Nunez) which is good but we might need to mix it up if they have to pitch back to back

Pinto and Tank are options from the left side but they are if's coming into this seasonas they were both shutdown last season

Kensing might not make it into the next season but he can be valuable in the middle innings setting up for the 7/8/9

Joe Nelson is definatley ining guy setting up Lindstron and whoever is going to be the setup man hopefully he has another great season making him a steal for 800k

Delgado and DLC have been roughed up in the Majors hopefully they can start the new season with tthat behind them because they'd be if anything guys to kill innings

Badenhop shows he has some talent but he really cant go that deep into games so he could be a good LR man

It's ridiculous that we didn't even bring back Waechter just because he was arby-eligible. For anyone who can't understand my antagonism towards the FO's wheeling and dealing, they need to look at this move again because its where it all began. I just can't understand why people try and justify the Olsen/Willingham trade and the organization's willingness to trade anyone making more than the minimum when this move clearly shows the true colors of the organization. It's plan out sickening.

Don't be surprised if Dan Uggla is the next guy to go. I'm sure the Indians would be very interested if he were made available.

Once again, harping on the 4 expendable arbi guys that we traded doesn't mean that the 10 or 11 left aren't here. Stop treating it like they are gone as well.

I understand your hate for the Marlins FO, but this move is not really that big of a deal. Relievers rise and fall every year. I'm pretty sure we can bring in another guy to replace him at a much cheaper price.

It's not like Waechter was gonna make millions. He was gonna get a modest raise up to 600k or so. I know that relievers rise and fall, but it's not like he was breaking the bank, in fact, a reliable reliever for that price is quite a bargain. Instead, we're being our usual selves but I guess its not gonna hurt us too much, considering we've still got a few more regulars that we can trade for relievers this offseason.

I guess it's convenient to forget how Waechter turned like mayonnaise at the beach from unhittable to batting practice halfway through the season. June, July and August his ERA was near or above 5.00, in September over 8+. That was okay last season, but if this team *wants* to contend in 2009 it's not okay.

I like the guy, you've never read me say a bad word about him but let's not go overboard. I will say, if the same thing happens with Joe Nelson, there had better be a pretty good explanation why, and it shouldn't be money.

At what expense do you want to keep the Waechters of the world? And I don't mean financially. We have DLC, Kensing, and Delgado, at least that I know of, and maybe even a few others, that are out of options. Do we DFA them in order to keep a Waechter type. Do we send a Ceda or a Tucker down to the minors if they are ready in order to keep Waechter? These moves in my opinion are simply roster management. Even the Marlins can afford 600K.

That's probably why even Nelson is on the block now. Nelson had a nice season but he is an injury prone journeyman. Do you keep him and DFA a young guy with some upside? I wouldn't. Why not try to get something for Nelson when his value is as high as it ever will be?

Because people don't trade for the Joe Nelson's of the world when teams are dumb enough to DFA good relievers.
