December 19, 200817 yr For those who read mlbtraderumors, the last couple of times Turnbow's name has been mentioned, it seems like the Marlins are one of the teams interested. I would personally love to have him. Also...it seems like Ray King may be an option, too. I wouldn't mind him, either.
December 19, 200817 yr Ray King is OK as the LOOGY-iest LOOGY to ever LOOGY... and I mean, absolutely no RHB against him... not really interested in Turnbow at all
December 19, 200817 yr Author Ray King is OK as the LOOGY-iest LOOGY to ever LOOGY... and I mean, absolutely no RHB against him... not really interested in Turnbow at all Yeah...obviously, King would be a LOOGY. As for Turnbow...I think he's an intriguing option. The Marlins usually find a knack of getting that "one reliever" each year & helping him get back to his good days / totally getting fortunate (as they did with guys like Borowski, Nelson, Gardner, etc.) Anyways...Turnbow has one problem...and that's his control. His K #'s are nice, and he's tough to hit b/c he has good stuff. The one year he was able to keep the walks down...he posted VERY GOOD #'s. With an unproven bullpen...I wouldn't mind Turnbow, at all. Maybe a change of scenery is what he needs. Who knows? I'm not sure what it'd take to get him here, though.

(Use one of Lou's many projections to answer this question)
December 19, 200817 yr Author Joe Nelson > Derrick Turnbow Nelson's a career journeyman, who had his first successful year at the age of 33, last year. Derrick Turnbow, at the age of 27, was considered one of the best closers in baseball...and something has gone wrong since then. I don't think it'd be a dumb idea to give him a try...all depending on what he wants. He also seems to fit what Beinfest likes in the bullpen, moreso than Nelson, these days. Chances are that if you are a righty, and don't throw 95+...you won't be in the Marlins bullpen. I think Turnbow has more upside than Nelson...and if we get fortunate with him, and he could, somewhat, return to his dominant form in '05, we'd get some damn good value for him (as we did for Gregg) when he's ready to leave.
December 19, 200817 yr Keep in mind, I wasn't suggesting Nelson is a good reliever. Turnbow is just that bad. He's so bad that he isn't as valuable as a journeyman.
December 20, 200817 yr Minor league deals. They need to earn roster spots. The bullpen right now is Lindstrom, Nunez, Pinto, Cruz, and Kensing. One slot is going to go to Meyer/Kroenke as a 2nd lefty, and the last spot is going to go to the other of Meyer/Kroenke, J. Delgado, or the Marlins may simply by pass our out of options players and go with Tank, Tucker, or a minor league free agent. That's where Turnbow or King come in. Literally the last spot or two. Love it on a MILB deal. Horrific if it's guaranteed MLB.
December 20, 200817 yr Author With three LOOGYs around do we really need another one? 3 LOOGY's? Who are these 3 LOOGY's on the current team, you speak of? Did we clone Tankersley?
December 20, 200817 yr With three LOOGYs around do we really need another one? 3 LOOGY's? Who are these 3 LOOGY's on the current team, you speak of? Did we clone Tankersley? Pinto is a lefty, so people automatically assume he's a LOOGY, despite him being substantially better against RHB in his career. Fredi falls into this trap sometimes too.

Tank, Kroenke, Meyer. Meyer and Kroenke? On top of the fact that they shouldn't automatically have a spot on the team b/c well...they haven't had it with any other team, for a reason... Meyer, in his major league career, has a .351/.406/.561 line against left-handed hitters. Kroenke's a Rule V guy, who hasn't thrown a pitch in the big leagues yet. I wouldn't expect BOTH to make the team, and I'd say they're more "lefties who could come in and pitch an inning or 2" out of the pen, instead of "LOOGY's." Ray King is a proven, consistent LOOGY. A minor league deal for King wouldn't be a bad idea, at all, especially when you consider how much our only real LOOGY (Tank) struggled last year. An "insurance policy / 2nd LOOGY" never hurt anyone.

December 20, 200817 yr Joe Nelson > Derrick Turnbow No. :lol Are you aware that Derrick Turnbow has been DREADFUL ever since his "one hit wonder" 2005 season? That's right. Derrick Turnbow is GARBAGE. He's had one accomplished season. The rest of the years, his numbers have been unsightly. And it's not like he has a minor league track record to back it up. He's awful. Again, I'm not trying to make this out to look like Joe Nelson is some kind of phenom. He's not. Turnbow is just THAT BAD.
December 20, 200817 yr Tank, Kroenke, Meyer. Gee, I'd question if any of them even make the team in '09 (not that I don't want them to or anything negative but each one is a big, big question mark.)

Assuming no one is acquired, one of them will definitely make it. Even if the King rumors are true, I'd go with Tank over him, hands down.

I've never seen or really don't remember in the case of Meyer either of them pitch, but I don't know that Tank has it. Like I said, not a put down and I certainly like to see him step up his game, to me he's really in a "show me" stage in his career so I just can't pick one over the other. I was reading today that because of the WBC spring training is extra long and the season starting later than normal so there' s plenty of time to find sort this kind of stuff out.
December 20, 200817 yr I rather have Jorge Julio on crack then Ray King... Guy is awful!! Derek Turn... Ill take for a minor league deal.. Good stuff, maybe a new scene will help

Just thinking how the Marlins make their teams, it's pretty likely one of Meyer/Kroenke/Tank(who has options) makes the team as the last reliever to have a second left handed option. I'm not saying if any of them are going to be any good. I'm just saying, that's pretty much the pool of lefties we have besides Pinto (who got right handers out more last year). The Marlins aren't spending money on Rule V claims and such if they aren't seriously creating some camp competition for a lefty.
