December 22, 200817 yr FishStripes thinks he will be the next Julio. Apparently the Marlins have some interest in Derrick Turnbow. Florida has inquired about free agent Derrick Turnbow, who formerly was a standout closer in Milwaukee. The Marlins' interest in Turnbow would be for a Minor League contract, with an invitation to Spring Training. I have no problem with whomever the Marlins bring to camp on a Minor League contract. I just don't want this to turn into: "He's our guy." from the start. You remember the 2007 season of "He's our guy" closers. First, we traded gave away for Yusmeiro Petit, who is by the way slated to be the number four starter for the D-Backs, for Jorge Julio. Who we are still waiting for Jorge to get his first save as a Marlin. Then the club traded gave away Randy Messenger for the next "He's our guy", Armando Benitez. Who was an improvement over Julio, but was probably the worse member of the pen during his time with the Marlins. Turnbow is coming off shoulder problems and he has difficulties with his control. Sure, he has explosive stuff, but that is next to useless if the catcher is having to run back to the screen to retrieve it on almost every pitch. Giving him a look see in the spring, isn't a bad idea. And if he makes the club on his merits, great. But he better not turn into "He's our guy" unless he earns it. (One final note just for grins: Jorge Julio is expected to be in the Brewers pen next season, the same Brewers who don't want Turnbow. As of right now...the Marlins have made it pretty clear that the favorite heading into Spring Training is Matt Lindstrom (unproven).

December 23, 200817 yr It's funny how in looking back I can't criticize Beinfest for going after Jorge Julio or Armando Part Deux-he was trying to capture lightning in a bottle. The only mistake was in giving those two more opportunities to blow games then they deserved. While Randy Messenger may or not be a nice guy, he is inconsequential as a player and completely replaceable. And if Petit is in line as the 4th starter for the Diamondbacks, then that is one sorry ass pitching staff. Until I see otherwise I will assume Petit has no chance to survive as a starter in baseball. And I've always looked at those moves as complete botches by the FO when they seem perfectly reasonable now.

I think at this point they're going to keep De La Cruz over Kensing. Logan would be nice to keep around, but he's had his shot.

December 23, 200817 yr I look at this as an opportunity as much as a problem. The best will prevail in spring training and make the roster, the rest will be traded away for younger models and the cycle continues. I have zero preference on a personal basis whether Kensing or DLC is on the roster Opening Day, given than the better of the two (or the better of whoever is competing for a spot) is who makes the team.

December 30, 200817 yr I don't think I would touch Turnbow with a 10 foot pole. I hate pitchers that walk a ton of hitters. He has walked 5.87 batters every 9 innings and that's pathetic for a reliever. Honestly, I think I would rather take a chance on Brendan Donnelly if he's healthy.

They'd have to release some people to make it happen. As of right now, Pinto / Nunez setting up with Lindstrom closing sounds more realistic.
December 30, 200817 yr Tucker was a few years away when we saw him last year. He's not MLB ready unlike a guy like Volstad who seems more ready at about the same age.
