December 30, 200817 yr I think this is a waste unless he signs a minor league deal. He has a bad shoulder which so far he has not had repaired as far as I know. He was plain awful in his only appearances last year. He's a Spooneybarger in the making.
December 30, 200817 yr http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...8&fext=.jsp 1 of 3 finalist we are, for a MINOR LEAGUE deal??? Hell yeah sign me up.. Guy has wicked stuff, just needs to be healthy and learn how to use it again.. No doubt i would take him on a minor league deal, see if he makes the team out of ST
December 30, 200817 yr He's a Spooneybarger in the making. Turnbow at least made an All-Star team. Spooney never went anywhere.
December 31, 200817 yr the marlins are known to resurrect careers of closers so i wouldn't be surprised if turnbow chooses the marlins over the pirates and tigers
December 31, 200817 yr If hes smart he wouldn't go to the AL where he would get destroyed and the NL Central didn't work for him last time He could come to the fish and battle his way into the pen through spring training and a few months in the minors and hopefully he could be back to form and be a big set up guy in the late innings
December 31, 200817 yr the marlins are known to resurrect careers of closers so i wouldn't be surprised if turnbow chooses the marlins over the pirates and tigers I was thinking exactly this. When a player is coming off a terrible year, the natural place for out of luck relievers nowadays is the marlins. I don't think anybody really wants the Pirates unless they offer around $2 million, and the Marlins just seem like a fit for Turnbow.

I'm not sure the Pirates have to offer that much if the Marlins are only offering an MiLB deal, but this is likely to be the place where he has the potential to both make the bullpen and be part of a contending team. And our history with Borowski, T. Jones et. al should only benefit our cause.

January 1, 200917 yr Well, based on our needs, I would imagine we try to land Pudge. But I've read somewhere that he does have other suitors. So, I guess we all can agree that the hole at catcher hasn't been filled. What else. Also, our fourth OF spot needs to be filled. Unless we fill that spot from within. Finally, are we going to go w/ our bullpen as is? Or do we look for a FA? Who is left?

If we are willing to put up that much money, it would have been a much safer bet with Joe Nelson, who K'd more than 1/inning last year anyway, with good control.
