January 17, 200917 yr Again, where would he play? I don't want him taking Maybin out of center. He'd be the 4th OF'er. or the starter when Hermida falters. Non Beliver I'll remeber this when he prove you and everybody else wrong Plus Hermida's struggling >>>>> Andrew Jones' stuggling Hermida has proved nothing, and Jones is coming off a bad year. I seriously would rather bring in Posednick, but we didn't want to spend any money on the real guys who would help us such as Burrell or Ibanez, so we may be stuck with hoping Hermida pans out and Amezaga to fill in if needed. Erick took the words out of my mouth :thumbup Plus whats the beef with Jeremy what has he done wrong he's not bad he an aveage player at the moment and has the potential to be above average maybe even a star
January 17, 200917 yr Yeah I figured 4th OF, but I'm sure he is looking to go somewhere where he can be an everyday player. After all, he already stated that he does not want a minor-league deal. After his last 2 years, he might not have a choice.

Jones has been pathetically terrible for two years now, much worse than Hermida. Take a look: Hermida: .271/.344/.450 in 931 AB Out of all 54 NL outfielders with at least 500 AB, Hermida ranked 26th in OPS, 27th in BA, 30th in OBP, and 28th in SLG. That was disappointing. Jones: .205/.297/.369 in 781 AB Out of the same 54 outfielders, Jones ranked 53rd in OPS, 54th in BA, 54th in OBP, and 47th in SLG. He has arguably been the worst outfielder in baseball over the last 2 years. Hell, Andruw hasn't even been the best Jones out of him and Jacque. Now that's saying a lot.
January 17, 200917 yr I'd love to get Andrew but hes been slumping bigtime, he could break out at anytime with hard work and the right hitting coach and could be a steal for a smaller contract as a 4th outfielder plus he's still a pretty good fielder. He did usually kill the fish, can anyone get his stats in Dolphin/Pro Player Stadium? "In addition, he dislikes Dolphin Stadium, where he is a .246 lifetime hitter with 11 homers and 40 RBI in 321 at-bats." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basebal...0,6941469.story
January 17, 200917 yr What sort of character is he meant to have in the clubhouse? Is he a fun guy or one that thinks he is bigger than the team?
January 17, 200917 yr It shouldn't be even vaguely difficult for the Marlins to determine what shape he's in and what conditioning program (if any) he's been on since the of the season. This is where a good agent kicks the guy in the a*** and asks him "Do you want to cash a check every month for the next four years or do you want to play baseball?" because those are Jones' two choices. If the guy has made any attempt at getting in shape, throwing $400k his way is a no-brainer, although the roster issue is another, because the potential reward so far outweighs the risk. But this might be helpful to the discussion - Jones played in only a handful of DWL games before quitting batting .188 in sixteen at bats with eight strikeouts (back in last December) and has not been on the the team's playoff roster since. So unless he's playing in another winter league and it's not listed anywhere, he gave up and went home. Perhaps that's he's listed at 240 lbs in the Aguilas' roster vs the 210 that was his official Los Angeles Dodgers weight is a strong indicator that he's decided to cash those checks first and worry about baseball second.
January 17, 200917 yr Actually I believe it came out that the team he was playing on asked him to leave. I'm not 100% sure on that but more sure than not.
January 17, 200917 yr Actually I believe it came out that the team he was playing on asked him to leave. I'm not 100% sure on that but more sure than not. I posted a thread about his leaving Winter Ball awhile back. The public reason was that his wife was sick. However, the source of the article was a Winter League reporter. This reporter "thought" that the real reason he left was because the team had wanted to dismiss him, but didn't want to upset rafael furcal who had asked the team to let Jones play in the first place. So, Jones "left" to tend to his wife. I never saw an actual quote from a team manager/official, etc. So, as far as I know, this was all purely analysis on the part of the reporter.

I wouldn't be surprised, his time there was pretty brief (it was the Aguilas in the DWL). While it's always fun for some to belittle winter league ball, the players, so many of them ML's, take it very seriously and since the first of the year have been playing playoff baseball which ups the competitive spirit a notch.
January 17, 200917 yr He's headed home from winter ball: The usually accurate Raul Tavares sends me the following missive via e-mail (spelling and punctuation is all original): Hi rob, happy new year, just a few lines to let you know that andruw jones left his team for good, and is not coming back, the reason is that his wife is sick, but the real reason for me is that the team asked him to leave. He was struggling here, only a .148 ave, slow in defense, the team was desperate and they did not release him just because furcal recomended him and did not want to upset rafael, jones replacement hit a 3 run hr and aguilas won just the second game of the semi finals. http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/...ts_winter_ball/

He might have an average BA at the DS, but hit still hits .246/.352/.417 in 378 PA.
January 20, 200917 yr Author Well looks like I was right, the Marlins are looking at Jones, ANY THOUGHTS?
January 20, 200917 yr Better be cheap and put him on an extensive training program...then see how he fares in Spring Training...
