January 5, 200917 yr Author This guy is a bust, why do we need him? And if they are planning on getting him they better be planning on spending only 1% of what he is owed.

If we can get him to a 1-2M deal, a MiLB deal or a ST invite, I'd be down... he could be this year's Jacque Strap... err Jones... and if he goes back to his old ways, cool, if not, we show him the door... At the very least you get his defense, hopefully his +/- was predominantly influenced by his lack of playing time

January 5, 200917 yr Are u guys forgetting Cameron Maybin? We are sorted in the CF position for many years to come

January 5, 200917 yr Are u guys forgetting Cameron Maybin? We are sorted in the CF position for many years to come A+ CF defense in LF or RF is usually stellar... that's my line of thinking, the Mets were thinking about picking him up to flank Beltran, no reason we couldn't try him out at a corner
January 5, 200917 yr From what I read the Braves are interested, expecting to pick him up for or near the minimum believing the Dodgers will release him, but part two is they would bring him into camp during spring training, if he does well great, if not they cut him and the fan base knows at least they tried.
January 5, 200917 yr This is just the type of chance the Fish like to take...cheap with big upside. I'm sure they're looking at him and I'd have no problem giving him a shot.
January 5, 200917 yr Author Well like I said if he is back to his old form, than I am with signing him at the minimum, that can be huge for us. I just don't know whose spot he would take.
January 5, 200917 yr If hes cheap HOP ON JONES!!!! do it!!!!!! Guy has struggled but i mean come on 1-2 mil or a ST invite if its cheap!?? Why not, NO PRESSURE w/ the marlins... Could help maybin along the way!
January 5, 200917 yr I wouldn't mess with Jones. He starts a massive decline in the first year of stringent drug testing? Very interesting.
January 5, 200917 yr for a $1-3 million dollar contract, it would be a steal. He still has some left in the tank, and would give us flexibility to trade Hermida and call up Raynor or Cousins as a 4th outfielder

He still has some left in the tank, and would give us flexibility to trade Hermida and call up Raynor or Cousins as a 4th outfielder That's a big gamble IMO. At least that'd have to wait until after spring training. If anything, keeping both Jones + Hermida would give us a really strong 4 OF's, but trading 1 would make us quite vulnerable. Plus, I'd much rather Raynor/Cousins continue getting starts in the minors.
January 5, 200917 yr Are u guys forgetting Cameron Maybin? We are sorted in the CF position for many years to come Would be a great mentor for Maybin. Still has one of the best outfield gloves in the game. And like I put in the other thread, if Hermida is dealt, he'd be a good insurance policy.
January 5, 200917 yr HELLLL TO THE NOOOOOOO. Andruw Jones circa 1998, absolutely. Andruw Jones present day, no effing way! His career jumped the shark two years ago.
January 5, 200917 yr The way I see it is we have two big holes right now: Back-up catcher and fourth outfielder. Jones would be a solid addition and would close up one of those holes. Defensively, he's going to be well above average and he's a better option than Carroll if one of Ross/Maybin/Hermida don't pan out or go down with injury. Offensively, he's never going to hit 50 homers again but if he can put up a mid-700 OPS with plus defense then I'm satisfied with him as the fourth outfielder. The biggest question is whether he's willing to play here or not, and for a 1 year deal which will pay him less than 3 mil with incentives included. I don't think he's receded to the point where he would consider a MILB contract, but he certainly shouldn't be expecting multi-year offers from anyone. That said, there are probably five or more teams out there that are interested in one year deals and are more attractive to him salary wise than the Fish.

Obviously I don't know the guy so I can't speak from personal accord, but those who do often say he has a horrible work ethic. He's defensive abilities are most likely a very strong natural ability rather than something gained (not that he didn't work for it, but that it came a lot easier to him than others). Meaning he would not be a very good teacher. It's very hard to teach something that is a natural talent, a completely different thing to teach something that is learned. Plus very very bad if he displays a poor work habit. I'd want him for his abilities, not for him to be a mentor.

It will be playing time. He'll go somewhere we he can start. If he makes 3m here as a back up, he's not going to make much next season. If he makes 500k with Atlanta or co, and produces again, he'll be in line for another fat contract. He's already making a ton of cash this season, he'll likely go to the place where he has the best chance of getting regular playing time.
