Marlins ask Dodgers about Jones?

Featured Replies

I don't know I mean I've heard he's lazy as hell and was just a very gifted player. Plus he seems to think he can just try to pull every thing that's thrown to him. But if he'll play for cheap then sure, maybe he's found some motivation and will turn it around.

I say NO! He is toast. Bad work ethics not a good clubhouse guy. Even his defense has hugely eroded. Let the Braves try to rekindle his career. I want him nowhere near the Marlins younger players

The way I see it is we have two big holes right now: Back-up catcher and fourth outfielder.

Jones would be a solid addition and would close up one of those holes. Defensively, he's going to be well above average and he's a better option than Carroll if one of Ross/Maybin/Hermida don't pan out or go down with injury. Offensively, he's never going to hit 50 homers again but if he can put up a mid-700 OPS with plus defense then I'm satisfied with him as the fourth outfielder.

The biggest question is whether he's willing to play here or not, and for a 1 year deal which will pay him less than 3 mil with incentives included. I don't think he's receded to the point where he would consider a MILB contract, but he certainly shouldn't be expecting multi-year offers from anyone. That said, there are probably five or more teams out there that are interested in one year deals and are more attractive to him salary wise than the Fish.

I really doubt salary will be the question. It will be playing time. He'll go somewhere we he can start. If he makes 3m here as a back up, he's not going to make much next season. If he makes 500k with Atlanta or co, and produces again, he'll be in line for another fat contract. He's already making a ton of cash this season, he'll likely go to the place where he has the best chance of getting regular playing time.

Another reason why I don't see him signing here. I can't see the FO trading away one of Ross or Hermida to open up a corner for Jones, which would be a huge risk. What I meant was the biggest question was whether he would be willing to play here as a fourth outfielder in addition to a low salary. After reading the MLB thread, I can see why salary (atleast for this year) isn't a major concern for him.

Unless we trade Ross or Hermida, other low-budget teams are still going to look more attractive to him in terms of playing time.

Are u guys forgetting Cameron Maybin?

We are sorted in the CF position for many years to come

Would be a great mentor for Maybin. Still has one of the best outfield gloves in the game. And like I put in the other thread, if Hermida is dealt, he'd be a good insurance policy.

I'm not all to sure of that. Obviously I don't know the guy so I can't speak from personal accord, but those who do often say he has a horrible work ethic. He's defensive abilities are most likely a very strong natural ability rather than something gained (not that he didn't work for it, but that it came a lot easier to him than others). Meaning he would not be a very good teacher. It's very hard to teach something that is a natural talent, a completely different thing to teach something that is learned. Plus very very bad if he displays a poor work habit.

I'd want him for his abilities, not for him to be a mentor.

Who are you referring to when you say "those who do"? I've always viewed him as a pretty hard working player.

And just to let you know, he had several years at the beginning of his career, including his year spent in the minors, in which he posted some not so great fielding totals. It really wasn't until 1998 that he started to become the outfielder he is today. I definitely think he could definitely teach Maybin a thing or two.

Again, how did you come to this conclusion without knowing the guy? I hate when people say "he's a bad clubhouse guy". Have you actually been around the dude in the locker rooms?

Comments like this are nothing more than uneducated speculation.

And I like how you say he's "toast" when our entire offseason plan has been to retool with defense and speed. Despite his offensive shortcomings in the past two years, he posted an 18.2 UZR and 2.67 RF in 2007 and in less than 500 innings in 2008, a 3.7 UZR and a 2.43 RF. As I put in the other thread, in '07 and '08 combined, he was 22.5 runs better than the league average player. Not bad for a fourth outfielder/insurance policy low cost signing.

Knowledge is a good thing. Use it.

Reporters, players, officials, and co that due spend time with him in the club house and say so from the past few years. Hell even Frank Wren has said as much.

For quickness sake you can simply do a google search of andruw jones work ethic and get nearly 4000 pages about it.

Andruw Jones isn't young anymore. Are you sure he's still good even for his glove? I seriously doubt he can still move like he used to.

I guess you have to start from the premise that we are talking about a professional athlete who literally allowed himself to get fat. We aren't talking about a 1st baseman or a left fielder, we are talking about a centerfielder. His weight ballooned to the point that he is not the same defensive player. You can see that with your own eyes, reference to his clubhouse demeanor, true none of us are actually in the clubhouse so we can omly rely on what is reported and what was reported about Andruw Jones came to be very ugly. His grumblings were very publicized. He wanted to play everyday, which is ok, and never accepted his role as a bench player. He is reported to have become surly and isolative in the clubhouse, very different of the easy smiling kid from his early braves years. This character change increased the "juice" whispers that have lingered around him

Knowledgeable people use +/- for fielding ratings over RF (bleh) and UZR... :lol

2006: +27 (Ranked 1st at CF)

2007: +22 (Ranked 3rd at CF)

2008: -4

2008 was obviously impacted drastically by his reduced playing time - not to mention, I think getting out of the NL West could help him a bit offensively

Use what you like. You come to the same consensus. I didn't use +/- for the reason you mentioned: his playing time last year.

I'd attach one caveat here. If he believes that he may play poorly this year and never be good again, then he would, acting rationally, just take the largest guaranteed contract (regardless of other factors). Otherwise the playing time is an obvious consideration.

Jones is at least good defensively (though I have not kept up on him, he didnt lose that too, did he?) and would suite as a good bench player if we could get him, so long as we dont actually plan on starting him Im cool.

This is a good point. We're obviously not in Andrew's head but when a player recedes as far as he has (literally a fall from super stardom to a struggling bench player), he's bound to question his own abilities. To what extent he questions them could be the determining factor as to where he signs. If he feels he can be a productive starter again, he's going to go somewhere where he's garunteed 500 PA (provided he stays productive). Barring any trades that would change the dynamics of our outfield, we wouldn't be able to give him that garuntee.

If the largest contract is what he is after, assuming he would accept a bench role, we would still have difficulty signing him because of our financial constraints.

Andruw Jones is not built like Kirby Puckett or Tony Gwynn who were naturallywide bodies and played well eventhough they were heavyset players. They were both agile and quick. Jones has become Cecil Fielder-like where Fielder ate himself into a DH role in baseball. Sadly Jones somehow lost his swing as well he really can't get the bat around the ball anymore. BTW his average is hovering abour.180 in winter baseball right now. Striking out about 50% of his all his at bats. He appears to be in a bit better shape

I'm 50-50 on A.Jones.... He needs to start hitting... I'm glad he's getting back into shape(buddy told me he's lost 35 pounds).I was told he's just way over swinging.Hope he gets it right cause he's always been fun to watch....

P.S. Marlins please get Pudge Rodriguez.....

I made an earlier comment asking why he would be considered when we already have Maybin. However if and only if Jones would agree to a minimal contract, certainly nothing more than $1m then I wouldnt object to him playing with us provided his role was more along the lines of corner (LF esp) outfield/back-up.

That is of course, an initial role cos if he managed to find any form from his former self then he could be an extremely valuable acquisition for us with his solid defensive abilities. This is course ties in with the organisation pursuit of good defence, however his low average and many strikeouts are exactly the things we dont want, and characteristics of some of the recently departed players.

While it'd be awesome if we'd sign him and he would return to form in some capacity, I wouldn't be so fast to insert him into the lineup everyday. Unless Maybin is an unmitigated disaster, I would want him playing just about every day. And Cody plays excellent defense with a likely OPS of .750 or better. In my mind, unless he really is playing astoundingly well, he can only maybe grab a chunk of starts from Hermida if Jeremy is also really struggling.

Yeh I made it clear in my first post in this thread that I would be firmly against Jones taking any playing time away from Maybin. I agree with u, as I suggested above that the most likely spot he would receive any substantial playing time would be in LF if Hermida wasnt producing the goods and Jones was.

All this is of course hypothetical cos I still dont see him wanting to come to the Fish

Sign him? Didn't he just restructure his contract with the Dodgers to make it easier to trade him? Now he's only getting $4M next year, with millions more (at no interest) over the next 6 seasons. Makes his contract manageable... for us, and the Dodgers and the rest of the league.

However, South Florida and the Marlins would be a good spot for him. What are the Dodgers looking for? Pitching prospects probably?

I never saw a player get sooo bad soooo fast! Jones was on the track to the HOF, now he just needs to seriously get on a track and run non-stop until Spring Training. I wouldn't do this even if the Dodgers paid the whole salary.

I knew what ya meant and I agree. I guess I was trying to say that I'm getting less convinced that he's worth going after for $1+ million.

It seems like his ceiling has a high likelihood of leaving him as a backup. AKA I don't see him being good enough to warrant starting. So, I'm not sure it's worth it to pay $1+ million for a backup OF who could be a bust, but at best would figure to be a very solid 4th OF. I'm not sure that, given the Marlins' budget, that even the increase that a very solid 4th OF would give over a decent one would be worth that money.

In fairness, though, we don't really have a 4th OF with that sort of ceiling for 2009. Also, signing any FA would cost money, so once again it comes down to $$, particularly (in my mind) the relative costs of Jones to other FA 4th OF options.

Sign him? Didn't he just restructure his contract with the Dodgers to make it easier to trade him? Now he's only getting $4M next year, with millions more (at no interest) over the next 6 seasons. Makes his contract manageable... for us, and the Dodgers and the rest of the league.

At this point, I think he would need to be traded, although as I understand it, they might cut him at some point (but still owe him the money). Anyone have any idea what he might get in the trade market? Or is it most likely that everyone waits until he's an FA?

Maybe the Marlins can dangle a bullpen prospect so that the Dodgers get something in return but don't release him and make him an FA where we might lose the bidding (if we are indeed interested).

umm... I know we're bored, and I have discovered that as a rule, people on this board like to argue just to argue, but is there a link or any proof of any Marlins interest other than the original poster's speculation?

How about we trade Wes Helms for him so we can actually have a 4th outfielder on the roster and not 10 infielders.

Well, if we didn't have to give up too much to LA and they cover all salary besides the minimum, I'd surely be for it. That's the only way I'd do it. Give them Kensing or DLC and Andino or something...
