February 3, 200917 yr http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/02/dodgers-make-se.html Manny Turns Down Dodgers' Second Offer By Drew Silva [February 3, 2009 at 1:33am CST] 1:33am: Ramirez has turned down the Dodgers' one-year offer, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports. Hernandez lists the New York Mets, San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals as teams that are monitoring Ramirez' market. The Dodgers could find themselves in a bind if Ramirez receives a multi-year offer from another club. If Ramirez is offered what he considers a fair deal, sources close to him say that he wouldn't grant the Dodgers a chance to match it, forcing the Dodgers to go into Spring Training without their only star attraction and reliable run producer. Hernandez believes the Dodgers could possibly pursue free agent outfielders Adam Dunn or Bobby Abreu if they don't re-sign Ramirez. 9:11pm Monday: ESPN.com's Jayson Stark reports
February 3, 200917 yr Author Interesting that two of the three teams mentioned as being interested are in the NL East. I wonder how much truth there is to this? Can't see the Nationals as being a fit since they see to be set in the OF. And the Mutts have stated time and time again that they won't sign Manny. Guess we're gonna just have to see how this pans out.

February 3, 200917 yr 1 year / 25 million isn't enough... I think he ends up in SF You got it! Agree :thumbup
February 3, 200917 yr Why don't they just offer him a three or four year deal already, but for less money per year? The Dodgers need him, and it would be a huge loss if he ends up signing with someone else.

February 3, 200917 yr I'll play for half of that if you're interested, LA Is your name Andruw Jones? No... you couldn't be that horrible for half of $25 Mill haha
February 3, 200917 yr Will guys like Manny eventually take the best available offer so they can be on an Opening Day roster and play ball, or if no deal matches their demands, could there be the possibility of them sitting out part of the season?
February 3, 200917 yr Why don't they just offer him a three or four year deal already, but for less money per year? Too Risky
February 3, 200917 yr Manny needs to stop being Brett Farve part 2. he hasn't retired, he just doesn't want a 1 or 2 year contract.
February 3, 200917 yr Manny needs to stop being Brett Farve part 2. Big difference. Favre retired then came back. Manny just wants $$$

This has been a very strange offseason. Even with the economy's effect on baseball, I think most people expected Manny to be signed by early January at the latest. I'd have to think at some point, despite any "shortcomings" on an offer, Manny is going to have to settle. Its obvious he's holding out on a multi-year deal for roughly 20 million per year but spring training is less than two weeks away.

Theres no doubt Manny Ramirez is an elite player but hes getting old and he wants to be the 1st or 2nd highest paid player in baseball. He can also go out of control and always tends to be unpredictable. My point being is that he can only blame himself for the way hes acted. I think if he weren't a cancer in the club house at times he probably could have gotten his money by now.

I don't think he is a drama queen like brett. He is one of the best hitters in the game and has done more than Tex, ARod and some other guys and wants to make more than them. No problem with that.

The Dodgers need him, and it would be a huge loss if he ends up signing with someone else. B/c he isn't worth it. Why don't they just offer him a three or four year deal already, but for less money per year? Too Risky For a guy who had an OPS of 1.232 last season with the Dodgers? Yes, he's 36 years old, but he still dominates in the batter's box just like he did at any other point in his career. I think Manny will just accept the most amount of money on the table at this point, so if the Dodgers could get him at around a 4 year/$60-65 million deal, then it's definitely worth the risk.

Someone on the radio earlier made a good point - the Giants are still favorites in that division without Manny, assuming they'd get Abreu/Dunn instead (and for a LOT less money). So that may be why they don't have to overpay him. 4 year/$60-65 million is just way too low to think that he'd reasonably accept it. If he turned down 25 for 1 year, then he's probably looking for AT LEAST $45 million over two years, and there's no way he'd play another 2 years for only $10-15 million total. I have to think that he's looking for 3 years/$70 million+, or 4 years/$90 million+. I can't imagine him taking anything less, unless truly no one will offer him a deal similar to that before the season starts.

When you're 36, common sense says you'll decline at some point. Not to mention, the Dodgers are an NL team. If any team is going to give a DH a 3-4 year deal...it should probably be an AL team.

He's dreaming if he thinks he will get anywhere near $90 million in a four year deal. I couldn't imagine him getting any more than $70 million for four years. Let's say he signed a two year contarct for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. He will be turning 39 during the 2011 season, and $10-15 million seems plenty for that age. There's no way though, that he signs around a 2 year/$45 million deal, becomes a FA after the 2010 season, and then signs another contract where he will receive over $20 million per year.

Well, considering last year he hit for his highest average since 2001, and his OPS was the 4th highest in his 16-year career, no, I wouldn't say he is declining just yet, at least until he proves he is. No AL teams have shown major interest as far as I know.
