February 5, 200917 yr I know there are like 10,000 Pudge threads out there...but I heard on my way home on 790 that Loria has expressed interest in adding Pudge to the roster. This contradicts Samson's statements of "zero" chance :mis2 Anyway, on Sun-Sentinal it says that a source close to the Marlins' front office said it would only work if it were a performance laden contract worth $1 M, which I might add is, to a future HOFer like Pudge Rodriguez, quite insulting IMO. The Sentinel article also mentions something about the Marlins talking to the Phillies about Chris Coste. Seriously? Link
February 5, 200917 yr Author Wow...I take that " " back about Coste. He has a career line of .316/.361/.503 vs. LHP. Only 193 PA, but still.
February 5, 200917 yr Unless no other team is willing to offer Pudge a contract come (maybe) March, we will not sign Pudge for $1M plus incentives. Coste on the other hand is more doable, but I am not comfortable with trading with teams in our own division.
February 5, 200917 yr please please please please get Pudge!! I'll admit he's like my baseball man-crush (no homo) since the 2003 season. He is my favorite catcher hands down. Although, I'll admit he's not the same anymore, but I still believe he is a good player.
February 6, 200917 yr I would love Coste or Pudge. However, if you get Coste, he would most likely want to be the starter.

Seriously? Link The Phillies have a hot shot catching prospect (Marson) who just ripped AA. He will be taking over shortly. They also have a backup type sitting in AAA (Jaramilio) who could probably hold his own in a moderate backup kind of way. They have depth to trade from. Coste is alright, but I don't see why they would help us. Pudge for $1 bill and some incentives maybe getting it to $2-3 if he really rips, is a great deal. Payroll is just over $33 million right now, assuming Uggla wins arbitration.
February 6, 200917 yr I just checked, and here are all the left Catchers in free agency Gary Bennett Sal Fasano Paul Lo Duca Pudge and no joke, that's all that's left. We screwed ourselves imo by not grabbing an Ausmus or David Ross when we had the chance. By no means am i a fan of these two, but it seems very unlikely at this point that we are getting pudge, and either of these two would've been an upgrade over Rabelo at backup.

February 6, 200917 yr Coaste is pretty good vs LHP but there is no way he starts more then 80 games with the fish He'll probably get starts vs LHP and 10% vs RHP
February 6, 200917 yr It's on the mlb website too. In my opinion I think we should sign him. Now if its feasible with our payroll, remains to be seen. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20...8&fext=.jsp ps. That picture in the sun sentinel with Urbina and Pudge is beautiful. The ol' days! =]
February 6, 200917 yr A Baker/Coste platoon would be solid. In terms of offense, not too many teams would get the same type of production, imo, if we had that platoon.

Right now the Phillies have 5 catchers on their 40-man: -Chris Coste -Lou Marson -Joel Naughton (never heard of him) -Ronny Paulino -Carlos Ruiz

February 6, 200917 yr Pudge would do wonders for this team. Yes, we have a great catcher in Baker... I hope he continues to improve and be the catcher that he showed us glimpses of last year. Pudge cant catch 140 games anymore bc of age, but he doesn't want to be a backup. well that works out great because i personally don't want to see Baker catching 140 games at this point in his career. Split the playing time right down the middle. Keep them both fresher, longer. A veteran like Pudge is an asset to a team in more ways than just being a good catcher. He can make a good pitching staff great...and i can't think of anybody else i'd rather have giving Baker pointers than arguably the best catcher to ever play the game.

Unfortunately for you, the organization does.
February 6, 200917 yr Unfortunately for you, the organization does. Really? Care to give a link for that? If they really wanted and believed Baker could catch 140 games, then they would just go with Rabelo as the backup...which clearly isn't the case b/c they're rumored to be interested in a catcher.

There's absolutely no reason to not like Baker against right handed pitching and his defense is improving. We don't need to slap Pudge Rodriguez with a contract offer like this. We need a lefty mashing platoon partner. I wanted Toby Hall but since the Astros already signed him, Coste will suffice.
February 6, 200917 yr Right handed platoon =/= 140 games So I exaggerated. Either way, Baker should be and will be starting the majority of our games.
February 6, 200917 yr Author Right handed platoon =/= 140 games So I exaggerated. Either way, Baker should be and will be starting the majority of our games. I don't think anyone is disagreeing with that. Erick just said Baker can't catch 140 games, which is about what a full time catcher would be doing.
February 6, 200917 yr Right handed platoon =/= 140 games So I exaggerated. Either way, Baker should be and will be starting the majority of our games. Fair enough. For what it's worth, I wouldn't mind Coste either. I think I already said that, but whatever...said it again.
