He is up to take the spot of koronka. we will see how that goes but man we just keep calling up AAA players.

He won't be a starter from what I have read. Looks like someone from the pen will get the chance to start. Most likely Penn or Hopper.

I'm pretty split between Penn and Hopper as neither have great numbers this year. I would say why not try Meyer. He's pitched more than Badenhop has this season. Is longevity the issue why Meyer won't get to start, though? Or do we just have more trust in Penn and Hopper who both have 5+ ERAs right now?

Penn has the current advantage over Badenhop for Friday's start.

I'd love Penn to come in and gain the form that made him a top SP prospect in 2007. He can be devastating I've heard.

Meyer is easily the better of the three. The issue is that Meyer has been our best arm in the pen so far this season. To take out the best arm would then greatly weaken are pen. Now, yeah, starting rotation is more important, but Anibal now seems to be on the fast track of returning, and as Lou brought up, you really don't want to mess with a working product for only a few starts.

I have to admit to having growing interest in Sanches though. Since being comitted to a reliver basically full time in '03, he's put up real nice numbers. Very Justin-Miller like of not being impressive in the minors as a starter but then turning it around as a reliever.

 

3.26 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 8.96 K/9 (very near 1 per inn), 2.48 BB/9, 3.61 K/BB, 0.93 HR/9, 3.37 FIP

 

He's a FB pitcher witch is never that cool but his K/BB is real nice.

 

FWIW Chone projection system rates him averagely:

 

4.18 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 9 K/9, 3.38 BB/9, 2.67 K/BB 1.13 HR/9, 3.99 FIP

 

Nothing special and can be replicated by a lot of guys in our minors, but still of note.

 

From prior to the '03 season:

 

His fastball tops out in the high-80s, and he has a solid curve and change. Sanches doesn't have a plus pitch with his best offering being the curveball, and the changeup is newly developed.

 

"Sanches is a control pitcher," said Judd Choate (Royal's Scout). "He has a curveball, which is probably major league quality. He has a fastball that only reaches the high 80s. From what I hear, he's developed a change up, but I don't know anything about that."

 

With his success, you have to think the change has become good.

 

However, everything I'm reading keeps saying "control pitcher" so have to wonder if the strikeouts would really translate to the major league level.

Well i hope he doesnt do what Koronka and tyalor did and forget how to throw strikes.

I don't have high expectations for this guy. He never proved himself to be much of a big leaguer (career 6.13 ERA).
