Posted June 13, 200915 yr Is anyone else as fed up as me? Meyer as a LOOGY? Calero in a five run game but not in a one run game? I could go on and on. What the hell gives?
June 13, 200915 yr It is frustrating but its common knowledge now that Fredi doesnt yet fully have a grasp on the concept of how to manage his bullpen. I was baffled when he used Calero in a 5 run give knowing he would most likely be required in the next game or two which could be close ones.
June 13, 200915 yr There are several ways you can look at the bullpen and its usage. Calero has been effeective but has pitched way too often already, with Meyer and Nunez pitching almost as much Fredi has few options. Martinez obviously isn't an option really unless your up by 5 or down by 5. Lindstrom is your closer and only will pitch as so. You have to save the Hopper in case the starter blows and that leaves you Sanches, who thus far has pitched well. Hopefully Pinto returns to being effective and they can get rid of Martinez. The bullpen on the whole isn't bad but they worked too much, the starters need to complete more games or at least get through the 7th. Point to ponder when the only tool you have is hammer everthing looks like a nail, we need more tools!
June 13, 200915 yr Is anyone else as fed up as me? Meyer as a LOOGY? Calero in a five run game but not in a one run game? I could go on and on. What the hell gives? It is ridiculous. As I said in the gamethread, if we had lost the game today, he should've been blamed. He's getting worse & worse with this. Someone needs to tell him that Kiko Calero is the best reliever on the team.

You obviously don't want the game to get away, but you can still eat a couple of runs. Sanches will eat innings and will limit damage. Using your best reliever with a 5 run lead just isn't a good idea. I don't have that many complaints of his bullpen management though. Mostly using Pinto a lot previously, using both Pinto and Meyer as LOOGYs, using both Kiko and Meyer in low-leverage situations when they're our 2 best relievers are basically my only complaints (I believe Lindstrom staying as closer is on the front office). Like I said, could be a lot worse.

June 13, 200915 yr I just like the fact that Sanches has yet to give up an earned run in 11.1 innings, even after giving up 11 hits and 4 walks.
June 13, 200915 yr Why is Martinez still on this team Filling in till Pinto returns? I guess, but we brought up Tim Wood for about 5 minutes, who didn't even enter a game. We should have tried him out first.
June 13, 200915 yr Tim Wood only recently came back from injury and does not have much experience in the high minors. When he was called up, he was not expected to pitch in the majors, he was more or less there to warm a seat so that we wouldn't have to DFA somebody from our 40 man roster. He is in AAA to get back into game form after missing a month of baseball and to get the experience he needs. Cristian Martinez is just filler.
June 14, 200915 yr Christian Martinez isn't hurting our ballclub by being up here. He has essentially taken Hayden Penn's role- that of pitching in spots that don't actually matter and trying not to stink it up too bad. And the guy may have a bad ERA, but at least he doesn't come completely unglued and have epicly bad innings.
June 14, 200915 yr God, this is why I hate this place sometimes. Before the inning vs St. Louis, people were pro-Crithian. "He throws strikes, he looks good, blah blah blah". Two bad outings later and the man is a pariah.
June 14, 200915 yr I would like to see Freddi stick with Meyer for a couple of batters sometimes when often he throws him in for only one guy. Don't want to see him overused certainly, but he's fine against righties too so it's frustrating at times to see him used up after just one at-bat. Didn't hurt them tonight though, was good to see the pen hang on.
