Who should bat 2nd?

Featured Replies

How about trying, arguably, your best hitter against lefties? RONNY PAULINO!

Fredi seems to love the position swap in the lineup (the 3B hits 2nd...only reason why Helms is hitting 2nd, at this point I'm sure b/c with Helms you can't even say he has speed)...so try it with the catchers.

Baker has proven to be a good #2 hitter. Why the hell does he no longer hit 2nd?

I wouldn't be against trying it as he has mashed lefties but as Rab said having Paulino clogging the bases is a concern.

And why Baker is not hitting 2nd is a question I've been asking for a while now.

Because its going to happen whether I like it or not. Fredi and Beinfest like Bonifacio, I have just decided to not get pissed over this unexplainable infatuation.

Reporter: So lets talk about Emilio Bonifacio."

Beinfest: "Hes fast!"

Reporter: "What other tools does he have?"

Beinfest: "Negative 4. But damn it hes fast!"

Reporter: "Can he hit?"

Beinfest: "Not a lick. But hes got speed."

Reporter: "Plate discipline?"

Beinfest: "Nonexistant. A lightning bolt out of the box though!"

Reporter: "Pitch recognition?"

Beinfest: "Like a t-baller. But man can he zoom!"

Reporter: "Good baserunner?"

Beinfest: "A sitting duck on the basepaths! But just look at his high octane running ability!"

Reporter: "Good fielder?"

Beinfest: "Lenny Harris is Brooks Robinson by comparison. If Brooks Robinson was The Flash!"

Reporter: "Hes at least got a good arm right?"

Beinfest: "Average at best. But boy could outrun his own throws hes so damn quick!"

Reporter: "You do realize that he has been one of the worst hitters in the game, correct?"

Beinfest: "So what? You know what those 200 some odd better hitters dont have? His incredible erection causing speed! Who needs viagra when you have videotapes of Bonifacio running the 40 during spring training?!"

Reporter: "And this guy is playing, why?"

Beinfest: "Havent you been listening? The mother f***er is FAST!!!"

finally we agree

Let me guess...you think Gaby should hit 2nd, right?

Gaby should be a very good #2 hitter.

Especially against LHP, and that's where people are blanking at the moment.

Yea, Gaby Sanchez would be very good as a #2 hitter. But for now, it should be Baker Vs righties and Paulino vs Lefties. Paulino isn't fast, but he at least hits the damn ball, unlike Bonifacio or Helms.

I'm not sure why everyone is looking past Ross Gload. He's hitting well so far in the 2nd spot AND against RHP. That's exactly what we need, obviously. To find out who is better, let's do a direct comparison

2009 Splits:

Gload hitting .333/.333/667 in 12 PA against LHP.

Gload is also hitting .316/.316/.474 in 19 PA in the 2nd spot.

Paulino hitting: .312/.362/.516 in 69 PA against LHP.

Paulino also hitting .000/.333/.000 in 6 PA in the second spot. (Too minuscule a sample size to count for anything).

Okay, so Paulino has really excelled against LHP, just like Baker has excelled against RHP this season. I was never really denying that. It was his lack of speed that I was concerned with. Thus, the lack of speed would eliminate him from contention for hitting 2nd in the lineup. The massive lack of speed was the determining factor. That's just the way it ended up for me. It's just my opinion. Your case might be more logical, especially with the statistical support. I guess it just goes down to how much you value speed in the 2-hole. I'm not saying Gload is fast, but he definitely isn't near as slow as Paulino is.

Sorry to keep throwing the stats in your face, but I think that they really indicate what the Marlins should do in this situation. Pretty plain and simple.

That wasn't my point, really.

Don't know if this has been brought up because I'm too lazy to read three pages but if not Paulino because he's the slowest man on earth and would probably slow down Hanley on the bases, Brett Carroll. vs LHP: .348/.375/.652/1.027.

I would love to see Brett Carroll batting second considering the kind of hot streak he has been on. Like I said, you ride players through their hot streaks. Either Carroll or Baker in the 2 spot. I would hate to see Paulino there for obvious reasons.

If you're going by this, then I guess Baker shouldn't hit 2nd.

and Baker has been on his cold streak since when? Oh yeah, it was when he was put in the back of the lineup.

Put Baker where his tools are best utilized, I've said this for a while, Fredi hasn't done that.

I agree.

John Baker in 2008 batting 2nd

.329 BA, .420 OBP, .863 OPS 10 BB-15 K

Baker in 2009 batting 2nd

.311 BA, .400 OBP, .892 OPS, 8 BB-15 K

Why in the hell is he not batting 2nd?

We need to fax this to the FO or Email this to Freddi himself.

Somehow, someway they have to find out the truth!

I was saying Carroll second vs lefties only. Obviously Baker should be hitting second vs righties but that makes too much sense for this "manager".

Well he does have his reasons...

Bonifacio should bat 2nd vs RHP since he is very fast and you want speed at the top of the order.

and

Helms brings that veteran professional approach so he should start vs LHP.

we should play gload every day at first and move cantu to third. that way we can bat gload 2nd.
