June 22, 200917 yr Hanley Ramirez That's actually a pretty good idea. PWG wrote an article that says our best lineup featured Hanley hitting second. But we all know that's not going to happen. I would love to see what Erick said. Baker vs Righties, and Paulino vs Lefties. The article was based on a system from a website that would have a lineup that would produce the best runs production. Due to Hanley's high OBP it slotted him in the 2 hole but it isn't really the best option. It also had Bonifacio batting in the ninth spot. So, Hanley is basically batting third. It gave us an average of 4.7 runs per game I think. Not saying we should do it, just wouldn't be totally against it.

You can't take that part out and leave Hanley there and use that as proof.
June 22, 200917 yr I say the perfect lineup features Bonifacio in the 2 hole getting as many ABs as possible.
June 22, 200917 yr I say the perfect lineup features Bonifacio in the 2 hole getting as many ABs as possible. May I ask why?
June 22, 200917 yr Because its going to happen whether I like it or not. Fredi and Beinfest like Bonifacio, I have just decided to not get pissed over this unexplainable infatuation. Reporter: So lets talk about Emilio Bonifacio." Beinfest: "Hes fast!" Reporter: "What other tools does he have?" Beinfest: "Negative 4. But damn it hes fast!" Reporter: "Can he hit?" Beinfest: "Not a lick. But hes got speed." Reporter: "Plate discipline?" Beinfest: "Nonexistant. A lightning bolt out of the box though!" Reporter: "Pitch recognition?" Beinfest: "Like a t-baller. But man can he zoom!" Reporter: "Good baserunner?" Beinfest: "A sitting duck on the basepaths! But just look at his high octane running ability!" Reporter: "Good fielder?" Beinfest: "Lenny Harris is Brooks Robinson by comparison. If Brooks Robinson was The Flash!" Reporter: "Hes at least got a good arm right?" Beinfest: "Average at best. But boy could outrun his own throws hes so damn quick!" Reporter: "You do realize that he has been one of the worst hitters in the game, correct?" Beinfest: "So what? You know what those 200 some odd better hitters dont have? His incredible erection causing speed! Who needs viagra when you have videotapes of Bonifacio running the 40 during spring training?!" Reporter: "And this guy is playing, why?" Beinfest: "Havent you been listening? The mother f***er is FAST!!!"

Due to Hanley's high OBP it slotted him in the 2 hole but it isn't really the best option. It wasn't merely because of his OBP. It was because he's our best player and batting him 2nd gets him more total at bats and more at batsto start a rally with 0/1 out. The thought that your 2-hole hitter should be a speedster, situational or empty .300 hitter is based on the false premise of needing to advance the lead runner. It ignores that the lead runner is capable of advancing himself. It ignores that the following batters ae dynamic hitters (and baserunners). It's a stain left over from the time that big hits were sparse and runs even rarer. The focus was one getting that 1 run in. That's not today's game. That's not the style a team with a Hanley Ramirez should be utilizing.

June 22, 200917 yr VS RHP 1. Coghlan 2. Baker 3. Hanley 4. Cantu 5. Uggla 6. Hermida 7. Ross 8. Gload VS LHP 1. Coghlan 2. Ross 3. Hanley 4. Cantu 5. Uggla 6. Paulino 7. Helms 8. Carroll Ross in the 2 hole is disgusting :thumbdown
June 22, 200917 yr The prototypical 2 hitter on this club is CC. - He has the best eye on the roster. - He has above-avg. speed. - As a lefty he can hit behind the leadoff hitter if he gets on. - He can hit for some power, which I think the Marlins have lacked from many 2 hitters in the past. With the roster as of now I'd put Hermida leadoff (solely based on his ability to see many pitches), though that would never happen and CC 2nd. When Maybin is called up put him 1st with CC 2nd. That could be very nice.

June 23, 200917 yr I think you're all doing a great job explaining, better than I can do, so I'll just provide some stats: When hitting 2nd in the lineup in 2009: Hermida (71 PA) - .273/.324/.424 Baker (70 PA) - .311/.400/.492 Bonifacio (55 PA) - .245/.327/.306 (Yeesh) Helms (24 PA) .136/.208/.136 Gload (19 PA) - .316/.316/.364 Carroll & Paulino - not hit 2nd in the lineup Baker excels at hitting 2nd in the lineup, but is hitting .133 against LHP this year. So start him 2nd in the lineup against righties. As for the debate for who should hit 2nd against LHP: Hermida is hitting .194 against LHP, so he's not an option. Bonifacio his hitting .303/.312 against LHP as someone said...so that is what it is. Gload's sample size is small, but maybe give it a shot. Helms hasn't been good at 2nd in the lineup and is hitting .250/.255/.354 against LHP. Not very good. Baker vs. RHP Go out on a limb vs. LHP. Try: Carroll, Gload and (sigh) even Bonifacio. De Aza is up to, so we could try that also.

June 23, 200917 yr How about trying, arguably, your best hitter against lefties? RONNY PAULINO! Fredi seems to love the position swap in the lineup (the 3B hits 2nd...only reason why Helms is hitting 2nd, at this point I'm sure b/c with Helms you can't even say he has speed)...so try it with the catchers. Baker has proven to be a good #2 hitter. Why the hell does he no longer hit 2nd?

And it's a hit, Paulino to second right about... now."

June 23, 200917 yr You're right. I should have looked at more stats for Paulino other than just 2nd in the lineup. I really hate seeing Helms and Paulino hitting second due to the lack of speed. I eliminate them from consideration pretty much just for that. Oh well. I mean, I'm really up for anything as to who hits 2nd against LHP. Give it a shot, but I don't think it's a good fit. I'm more a fan of Carroll and Gload too. Sure, Gload has a smaller sample size, but he's got good numbers (.333) against lefties, albeit only 12 PA against lefties this year. So my order of preference for who should hit 2nd against LHP: Gload, Carroll, Paulino, Bonifacio. What some of you guys said got to me, but I still say Gload is our best option. Bonifacio has the speed which is great up there, but not if he can't even get himself on base.
