Fifth Starter

Featured Replies

Ok, so currently we do not have a fifth starter. We know Badenhop really should go back to his long relief role where he really helps this team out. Question right now is, who should be our fifth starter when the turn comes next? I mean Andrew Miller is injured, and Sean West didn't impress anybody in his last start (5 IP 3 ER, 0 BB). We really are thin on options at the moment, and I really can't think of anybody other than West who really could come in at the moment and be that 5th starter. If anybody can find any other options that make sense that would be appreciated.

EDIT: It seems after 3 days, we got our answer. Sean West it is. Thank god, we have a lefty again in our rotation.

Chuck James, a still fairly young lefty, is on free agency. He had an 11-4, 3.78 season in '06 and a decent '07 for the Braves. His minor league stats were also fantastic. 31-18, 2.24 ERA in 84 starts.

Throw him MLB minimum and give him a try.

They should have gone for Duke or Maholm. Instead, they insisted we needed a closer. Which I think we do, but they still didn't get the job done either.

NJ was a great pick up, but it's probably not going to mean anything with the lack of starting pitching.

I know he does not normally pitch in this situation nor for as many innings as he did, but Brian Sanches was really impressive. I'm not saying he should start though.

Would it be the worst thing in the world however, to go with a 4 man rotation? At least for a few weeks?

pavano would have been nice. yes his last 2 games were horrible but the previous 3 were pretty good. it wouldn't have taken much and he's probably not in the indian's plans for the future. a change to the NL would probably have helped too

is he healthy from shoulder surgery??

If he's back from surgery, it would take him at least a month in the minors to get ready. And that's if he's good to go now.

I also really don't like him, guy is a FB and HR machine.

He had the surgery last December. I think he'd be ready to go after a few rehab starts in the minors. And he's an excellent fly ball guy. Could really excel in a park like ours.

Turner Field surpress HRs just as much as Dolphin Stadium and yet he has a career HR/9 of 1.8

And "a few rehab starts" is a month

Having pitchers that give up a lot of XBHs has never bothered this FO in the past.

And I guess we could plug in West until he's ready.

Let's see...

Mark prior was released.

There's been some talk that duch, maholm, duke, davis, and garland being moved through the waiver wire.

Theres west and miller.

There's paul Byrd.

So we have options.

Its just a matter of how fast we can execute them before its too late.

What is BK Kim up to these days?

Um no.

It was a joke, but really, you wanna do something more than "um no"?

Why not? I'm not asking for an ace, I'm asking for a body who can stand out there and not give up 6 runs in 2 innings.

IDK, I really don't care who it is but if we can get them we better aim for Duke, Maholm or Garland.

When was the last time BYK pitched anyway?

Here's a thought...you know the Yankees are not very patient. They are going to be looking for a starter in August.

That could open up a cheap option for us...Sergio Mitre anyone? (I'm sure Rab approves!)

Oh, you know it sir!

I mean, the Mi-Train has kinda sucked in limited, but has he sucked so bad that it's worse than our other "options" in the 5th spot? I don't think so. I mean, even if we get Sean West performance, it would allow us to leave him in the minors where he belongs.

Mitre actually pitched very well in his 7 starts in AAA this year, and for what it's worth...he was able to go 5+ innings in 2 of his 3 starts with the Yankees. He's been getting hit hard so far with the Yanks, but the sample is small, and I'd say coming back to the NL would help him out some, as well.

I'd take him.

Am I the only one who thinks Brian Sanches has earned a start? This guy has pitched his ass off all season long and has looked good doing it. I realize he may not be stretched out right away but he can still pitch 4 or 5 innings until his stamina increases. He reminds me of Chuck Smith in 2000, a career minor league journeyman who is given one last chance to make an impact on a big league club and seizes it. We should run with this guy.

I would leave Sanches in the bullpen. He's doing a great job there.

As for Sergio Mitre, I wouldn't mind.
