August 2, 200916 yr Let's give this guy a shot until we figure this out: http://jacksonville.suns.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=P&sid=t564&t=p_pbp&pid=461902
August 2, 200916 yr Am I the only one who thinks Brian Sanches has earned a start? This guy has pitched his ass off all season long and has looked good doing it. I realize he may not be stretched out right away but he can still pitch 4 or 5 innings until his stamina increases. He reminds me of Chuck Smith in 2000, a career minor league journeyman who is given one last chance to make an impact on a big league club and seizes it. We should run with this guy. I don't know. Yeah, he's pitched some good innings sometimes but he's only started 3 games in the last 6 seasons in both minors and majors, with the last one being a single start in 2007.
August 2, 200916 yr Kim was released by the Pirates in ST in '08 after stinking it up. He has a restaurant, Umi Sushi, in San Diego. http://umisushisandiego.com/ He's technically a FA but hasn't pitched in 16 months and probably never will again other than in perhaps a restaurant softball league or the like.
August 2, 200916 yr Why not give Sanches a start, backed up by Badenhopp? We do have an off day on Monday before going to Washington. How about readjusting the rotation. Have Sanches start the last game against the Nats, pushing Volstad back a day. That would leave Volstad, Nolasco, and Johnson to face the Phillies and then revaluate the options next week at home. It's only a temporary solution until West or Miller is ready, but I like this option better then calling up a rookie or signing Byrd who hasn't pitched all season and would take a couple of weeks to be ready. Plus, if anyone thought Byrd would contrbute to a ML pitching staff, wouldn't he be on a team by now? I mean it's not as if there is a surplus of quality starting pitching in the Majors.
August 2, 200916 yr Willie Collazo? Dont know too much about him but his numbers look pretty decent and maybe a couple spot starts untill west or anibal come back
August 2, 200916 yr Let me say something crazy- give Hopper another start. Yes he was extraordinarily bad yesterday. But realistically we don't have an option that would likely be better in the short term. Long relief is a lot different than starting, but he showed he can get outs in that role. So he was very shaky- it was his first start. These things happen. But if we show a commitment to him perhaps he will be much less shaky the next time around and get the outs that he has shown he can get. Anyone else we call up is likely going to be shaky too so I think showing Badenhop that we are committed to him will help him fight through the jitters next time around.

August 3, 200916 yr The 5th starter will throw against the Phillies. I have a feeling it'll be Sean West, just b/c he's left-handed, really.

August 3, 200916 yr Collazo and Ungs are not serious options. Hensley is the probably the best option.
August 3, 200916 yr Clay Hensley, who's doing a good jod starting in AAA, could be a option, but it would be on 6 days rest 4-2 3.84era, averages 5 2/3 innings a start 43k/25bb West would have to start on 4 days rest, and i dont really like the idea of throwing our top pitching prospect, out on short rest to be a spot starter, and possible harm his development

August 3, 200916 yr There is also the elusive Anibal Sanchez. The question with him of course is when will the shoulder be ready. Pitched Sunday for Jupiter, nothing impressive, my guess would be West.
August 3, 200916 yr i'd love to have Ungs up. i thought he shoulda been called up years ago, but i forgot he existed till i just read his name. and his stats are STILL solid. so.... cmon. our throw sh*t on the wall and see what sticks thing has been workin.

With relievers. Remember Graham Taylor and John Koronka? Lets not have another one of those. Hensley actually seems like a solid option. He's had a decent MLB career. So I'm betting on either Hensley or West (simply b/c the Phillies have a lot of tough lefties/switch hitters on their team...although, I doubt they bring West to pitch on 4 days rest).
August 3, 200916 yr Hopefully Volstad's next start will be pushed from Thursday to Friday so we can run with Volstad-Nolasco-Johnson in Philly. Let whomever the Marlins choose as their 5th starter pitch against the Natinals on Thursday.
August 3, 200916 yr Hensley had a great start last night 8ip 1 ER 4 H 95 pitches in the 8 innings. 2 BB 3 K's

Let whomever the Marlins choose as their 5th starter pitch against the Natinals on Thursday. Very good point since the 5th starter wouldn't have to be anything spectacular to beat the Nats and won't be destroyed by the Phills. I also forgot that we acquired Hensley so we might consider giving him the shot.

The Phillies hitters are slumping right now. No need to trot out some AAAA pitcher on Friday, let the Phillies mash, and get out of their funk. Hit them with the big guns. We can't afford to run out one of the replacements against them when we are so close.

If he starts leaving pitches up then the Phillies are going to have a lot of 4 Baggers, but If he can pitch like he did against the Cubs minus the one pitch to Jake Fox he should be alright.
