August 3, 200916 yr Hopefully Volstad's next start will be pushed from Thursday to Friday so we can run with Volstad-Nolasco-Johnson in Philly. Let whomever the Marlins choose as their 5th starter pitch against the Natinals on Thursday. Very good point since the 5th starter wouldn't have to be anything spectacular to beat the Nats and won't be destroyed by the Phills. Exactly. The Marlins have to strike while the iron is hot. The Phillies hitters are slumping right now. No need to trot out some AAAA pitcher on Friday, let the Phillies mash, and get out of their funk. Hit them with the big guns. We can't afford to run out one of the replacements against them when we are so close. My only concern is Volstad this season at CBP. If he starts leaving pitches up then the Phillies are going to have a lot of 4 Baggers, but If he can pitch like he did against the Cubs minus the one pitch to Jake Fox he should be alright. Who do you think has a better shot, Volstad or... Koronka?

There will be, but that is the chance you take. For the most part, Volstad was dominant in his last outing. Overall he has pitched well against the Phillies this season, all things considered, posting a 1.07 WHIP in 19.2 IP, with 17 hits given up, 4 walks, and 17 strikeouts. The 7 homeruns he has given up against them has inflated his ERA to 4.12. Like you said, a key is that he doesn't leave fastballs up so the Phillies don't drive them out of their little bandbox.
August 3, 200916 yr koronka's not comming up Crystal ball or did you ask Admin Beinfest? He was just an example, but are there many other choices? I'm not saying he's going to be the guy but to say so certainly that he's not is a bit daft.

I'm not saying he's going to be the guy but to say so certainly that he's not is a bit daft. well due to the fact that his last 3 starts have been far from good and that hensley pitched great last night, Collazo pitched good his last 3 and im sure the FO is more comfortable with west than JK...... I don't see him comming up anytime soon

I don't see him comming up anytime soon I think Collazo's got almost no shot. And I don't think the FO is more comfortable with West, not because they don't think West is better but because they want to see West improve, not be murdered in CBP. I think Hensley's got the best shot, but we're going to have to cut someone else form the 40-man.

However, a player can only be outrighted once in his pro career. So if the player was already outrighted, he has the choice between becoming a free agent or accept a minor league assignment.

Maybe because hes still so young I dont know. So the hitters only have to worry about 3 pitches with him and can guess easier and a slider is harder to pick up than a curve. Nolasco has a curve and slider and this makes him tougher. Volstads K rate would go up even more too. Opinions?

August 3, 200916 yr If we are going to take anyone off our 40 man it should be someone who's done for the season like Proctor or Davidson.
August 3, 200916 yr If we are going to take anyone off our 40 man it should be someone who's done for the season like Proctor or Davidson. ya i'd rather davidson since proctor could help are pen next year
August 3, 200916 yr If we are going to take anyone off our 40 man it should be someone who's done for the season like Proctor or Davidson. Both are already on the 60 day DL.

August 3, 200916 yr Here's a crazy thought! Mark Prior was released by the Padres yesterday! Maybe we could give him a chance see if he has anything left in the tank! Thoughts?
August 3, 200916 yr Looks like the team is leaning towards bring back Sean West Source? Not doubting you, just curious.
August 3, 200916 yr Collazo would be perfect to bring up. it would be his day to pitch and hes been nasty lately
August 4, 200916 yr If we are going to take anyone off our 40 man it should be someone who's done for the season like Proctor or Davidson. Both are already on the 60 day DL. Good Point I forgot that there spot is cleared up, other options could be Leroux, Jai Miller, Tank or Trahern . there is no reason to DFA tank or Trahern and they would be claimed. And there is no reason to call them up to then place them on the 60 day DL because then that just starts their clock (both out for the year) And for Leroux, he's one of our better RP specs, no reason to DFA him. Cristian Martinez is probably the #1 guy to go
August 4, 200916 yr I'd say Martinez, De Aza, and Jai are the top three DFAs if we were to need spots. Not a big deal.
August 4, 200916 yr Since De Aza has already been outrighted I imagine he's a distant 3 behind the first two (but is #3), but yeah, it's not a big deal.
August 4, 200916 yr gaby sanchez is at worst a good back up CI. if we DFA him wouldn't pass the first team (nats) Cristian Matinez, Jai Miller, and De Aza are the 3 names.
