Posted September 16, 200915 yr Surprised no one has posted this, but here's a tidbit about Hermida's future from the Miami Herald (yesterday): • Though the Marlins likely will dump arbitration-eligible Jeremy Hermida, one scout said they will get little in a trade because teams ``know there's no way the Marlins will tender him. And not many teams would tender him at that price [around $3.5 million].'' http://www.miamiherald.com/1262/story/1235506-p2.html Not very surprising, tbh.
September 16, 200915 yr I'd be surprised if he actually is non-tendered after the season, and from the sound of it so would the scout the guy talked to. Some team out there will likely trade for him to guarantee them his rights, even though the return will likely be terrible. Classic case of buy low/sell high (Though certainly the $$$ of it make it less of a "buy low" situation).
September 16, 200915 yr I say there is no way we non-tender him. We might trade him for absolute sh*t, but not just cut him loose.
September 16, 200915 yr Author $3.5 million is insane for a player that has put up the numbers he has.
September 16, 200915 yr Actually---here's what ESPN has said-- "A scout tells the Miami Herald that the Marlins have no plans to retain outfielder Jeremy Hermida, who is eligible for arbitration. The scout adds that Florida will get little for Hermida on the trade market. " No plans, which means his fate is sealed already.
September 16, 200915 yr I think we trade him before the tender date. If we haven't traded him by that date then I think we non-tender him. There's no way we would risk having to keep him at $3 million or thereabouts.
September 16, 200915 yr Hopefully the fact that we won't need to shell out several million bucks to Hermida ensures we can keep Cody for at least 1 more season.
September 16, 200915 yr They'll get something for him. He won't be a non-tender. It might for an "Aaron Thompson," but it it's something. $3.5 isn't a lot to a mid market team for a guy that is an average starter as is, a plus platoon starter vs RHP, and still could break out as he is entering his prime years. I can see someone like Oakland jumping all over this.
September 16, 200915 yr Freaking finally the man will be gone. I know hes not as bad as most say but I really didn't like him. Plus we will no longer have to read threads about people bashing him.

No, but if he ever has a shred of production elsewhere we're going to see the "shoulda kept Hermida" threads. It's not unforeseeable that he could do better with a change of scenery and people should understand that. They should also understand the potential for him being worth the salary to the 2010 Florida Marlins is slim to none. I actually think his chances of being non-tendered are much better than people think. This guy is worth 3.5 million in arbitration, but he is likely worth a lot less if this team non-tenders him.

People will always need a scapegoat, if not Hermida, then someone else. Yep. There are always those narrow minded ones that absolutely require someone to point their finger at. But I doubt he is non-tendered. They have been trying to trade him with no success to this point. But I could see them adding a player or two to the mix and getting something done. Guys that have some potential but no real long term stability with this team. Several guys come to mind, but I'll hold back the names so the name calling won't start.
September 17, 200915 yr Part of the problem is the MLBPA and the way contracts work for younger players going through arbitration. The Marlins are up against a prescribed floor with Hermida that may work against both parties in that Marlins cannot offer him (as in the MLBPA would never allow it) a chance to rehabilitate his career with the Marlins for example signing a two or three year contract at a below market price because it sets a bad precedent for other ballplayers and for relations between the union and the league. I'm sure the Hermida love bunch will say "What do you mean rehabilitate his career? Look at this stat I have..." but the fact is whether you think JH is great, good, average, under achiever or a bum, there are players coming through the system and some would say already with the parent club who are capable of playing either corner outfield position doing it better and more productively (Ross now for example, potentially Stanton in the future) than Hermida offers. So in the end it seems to me we've more or less seen the last of Hermida and whether he is non-tendered or traded (I would gladly take another Leo Nunez and call it a day) in the long run it matters not he'll be playing elsewhere in 2010.
September 17, 200915 yr Hermida will prosper with another club, especially with a better hitting coach. Just the possible impact of Nick Johnson was tremendous. He got hurt while on a long run of quality play and the team is worse off for it. I wish him well and think the Marlins should retain him.
