-About Jorge Cantu

 

Strength

1. Good Defense as a 1B

2. Not a great lefty killer, but he has a good number against lefty.

3. Good work ethic

 

Weakness

1. Horrible Defense as a 3B

2. Didn't have much power as a 1B (=dilemma of offense & defense)

3. Have had lots of strikeout. (compare with avarage, he had poor OBP & OPS)

To put it simply, if we had to keep 1 of Cantu and Uggla, I would keep Uggla. Yes it may create some problems regarding exactly who will be our corner infielders but I prefer Uggla's bat, even if Cantu does maintain a better batting average.

There's also a question of whether Cantu's power will return.

Problem with Cantu is that he gives you a subpar glove at 3rd base and subpar production at 1st base so Cantu basically is best used in a bench role however his pricetag is too steep. He would be a good AL player where he could DH

We can move Uggla to 3B, and he does have the arm.

I feel if we get a good enough deal for some "good" pitching or prospects the Fish Should deal Uggla, move Coghlan to 2nd, Cantu to 1st and try to find a good enough FA maybe Pedro Feliz or someone who can play solid both ways. If we can't find anyone through FA then keep Cantu at 3rd and try either Gaby or Logan.

Once he gets his arbritration money this offseason, he will become overpaid. (at least for this team)

A .780 .OPS bat from a corner infielder is not as special as you're making it sound (take into account the way the Marlins handle payroll, once again).
