2009 Prospect Preview

Scouting Report: Jimenez shows strong athleticism from the waist up, but his legs and footwork can be somewhat lumbering. At the plate, Jimenez makes excellent contact and has a solid hitting approach. Very smooth swing, generates good lift on the ball and hits a lot of line drives. Doesn't strike out much; could stand to take a few more walks. Not much present power, and probably won't be a powerful slugger long-term, but could have 15 HR potential. Power probably needs to improve at least to that level if he wants to make the majors as a 3B. However, power is not his forte - his best tools are his contact, his approach, and his athleticism. Mediocre speed on the basepaths. In the field, his glove is about average and his arm is strong, but his throws can be inaccurate at times. He's shown some range, but his footwork needs improvement, and his first step reaction at third is subpar. He's also spent some time at 1B on his way up the ladder, where he's proven to be an adequate fielder. Jimenez impressed in spring training in 2008, and as such he skipped low-A to play against age-appropriate competition in 2008. Excelled in Double-A in 2009.

BTW with their pick down near the end, the Marlins passed. For one thing no 40 man room. It would seem this is the guy the Marlins wanted. How this impacts Cantu, Bonifacio, not sure yet, I guess it all will be determined once the Uggla situation is settled one way or the other, then the musical chairs can begin.

Pittsburgh selected John Raynor in the Rule V Draft.

The 1B/3B Jorge Jimenez that we might end up hit .289 13HR 87RBI 70/52 K/BB in 498 AB's at AA in 2009. This includes 22 doubles and 3 triples.

Hopefully this clears it up for you because this is going on far too long and you aren't making sense.

I didn't personally attack anyone. I was, but I didn't get worked up over it (by someone else calling me a d-bag and ridiculing me for my post count). I merely acknowledged it. It was obvious that you tried to brand me as a hypocrite because you first thought that I was personally attacking someone. Of course, that was nonsense and you are trying I cover yourself above which makes no sense.

The bottom line is that you made a very questionable prediction (that Lindstrom could net a fully paid for Mike Lowell) and you were very pompous about it. You tried to dismiss objections by evoking another poster's failed predictions, which is in itself not logically permissible. You severely overestimated Matt Lindstrom's value and I drew attention to this by making a sarcastic remark. I did not attack anyone's character; I attacked the lack of merit of your argument.

I'm sorry that you didn't know what the market rate for Lindstrom was, despite being so confident. I'm sorry that you couldn't recognize that nothing I've said amounts to a personal attack. Just take your lashings and move on.

The thing that bothered me, is that out of all the failed trade predictions made on this board, you chose mine, brought it from another thread, and made a sarcastic remark about it. By doing so, you singled me out, and personally attacked me.

Personally, I don't believe I was being as "pompous" as you say I was with my prediction. You and one other poster replied to my prediction. I have no problems taking criticism as long as it is sound and someone explains why they believe my prediction won't happen. Neither you or the other poster did that, you simply posted a one liner and left.

I do apologize to everyone else who's had to sift through all of these posts to get to what you really want to read about.

Waste of a trade. Not that Lindstrom is any good... but why trade him for what we believe is dead end players? Salary?

He's not worth $1.4 million and isn't a good player. He's a few bad innings away from pitching in the California Penal League.

His first 2 years were good and his third was plagued by injury...have no idea where you are coming from. Over 12,000 posts and you say something like this. There were 10 teams lined up interested...you should be ashamed of yourself. Instead of recognizing him for taking the ball everytime he was called on, and helping the Marlins in the bullpen, all you can do as a fan (I question that) is belittle the player that busted his a$% day in and day out. Congrats you get D-Bag of the year award.

Thanks for the name calling and the personal attack.

He was a decent reliever in 2007 but his success in 2008 was not as great as his ERA indicates. He walked a ton of batters. WHIP is a better indicator of relief talent than ERA is.

I also think it is frivolous to excuse bad performance on account of players trying hard. Why don't we bring in Nick Punto and David Eckstein while we are at it.

The bottom line is that he was not worth remotely close to $1.4 million. He will be easily replaced by virtually any of the arms already in the system and they will be at a lower cost. He will not be missed.

He is going to be clobbered in that small park in Houston.

Anytime...you had it coming. What's frivolous is for you to write on a blog and banter players. I'm sure each player that struggles says to themselves, "oh I think I'll try and get hurt this year so my numbers can be inflated because I don't want to make much money."

He hasn't even signed a deal yet so he could be getting more. Replaced? With who? You are right he won't be missed, he'll be loved in Houston.

Keep telling yourself that he is average if it makes you feel better. Clobbered? No clobbered is giving up 15 homeruns to tie with Kevin Gregg for the most in the National League...you know Nunez the current closer.

Low K/Low BB guys just aren't all that impressive because it normally doesn't translate to the major league level. It's one thing to do that without "stuff" in the minors, that rarely floats in the majors though. hence why someone of our own like Elih Villenueva is not one of our upper tier specs

In principal, or going straight by the stats, you may be right. But in real life it dosen't always work out that way. A guy that can get hitters to put the ball on the ground is very effective in so many ways. Not only does it usually result in an out, but it shortens his by inning pitch count allowing him to go deeper into games.

Not saying this is one of those guys. Just showing where your statement is flawed.

How is it flawed? I said rarely, not never. For every Nick Blackburn there is, there are 20 Graham Taylors. You're essentially agreeing with me.

I don't know what's worse. People on this forum being so sad that Lindstrom is gone, or the fact that the Astros decided to sign Brandon Lyon for 5 million per for the next 3 years?

So much for Lindstrom being so dominant and immediately closing after leaving us, huh?

A 30 year old reliever making around 1.5 million coming off a terrible year...won't even close. How about we just appreciate the fact we got 3 players for this guy?

Yeah because age has everything to do with being a good or bad player.

Considering it took him nearly 4 years to make his way to double A. In total it took 5 1/2 seasons make it to the majors to be a bust for the past 3 seasons; makes age is important. Unless he is a Marco Scutaro and has a break out year at 34 I think he has proven over almost 8 years he hasn't lived up to his "stuff" and probably won't now.

Age is important but a couple things.

It took him 3 years to get to double A. That's not that bad.

He's not "a bust for the last 3 seasons" by any means. You can argue that he's not that good or whatever but he's got a 3.88 career ERA, this being his worst season at 5.89, having a 3.09 ERA in 07 and 3.14 ERA in 08. I really don't see how you can call him a "bust". And he's sure as hell better than the actual busts we traded to get him.

Lol. C'mon, buddy. You've never talked badly about certain players on this board before (Uggla and Nunez, specifically)?
