By Craig Calcaterra UPDATE: I have learned that the PED suspension is NOT a New York player. WFAN (and other sources) are reporting and/or speculating otherwise. And Craig Carton tells me that I should go to journalism school . . .

10:28 A.M. Baseball Prospectus' Will Carroll tweeted this first yesterday afternoon, and I have since confirmed it with a baseball source: a major league player is going to be suspended for a PED violation, possible as early as this week.

I could not confirm the player's identity, but my source tells me that it's a "semi-big" name, though not a "huge" name. I imagine that, once the name is revealed, we'll have more fun arguing about what being a "semi-big" player truly means than we will wondering why he was not a bigger name despite taking PEDs.

Updates as they come . . .

Wonder if this comes true.

Semi big Name, not in NY---

I got a feeling it's a Red Sox Player, but

"He No Big Papi!"

Supposedly it's a National League pitcher.

I doubt it's a Marlins player. The only semi big name would be Johnson and I doubt he would risk that after already getting guaranteed money.

Be Krod.

My guess for a Marlin would be Anibal Sanchez with all of his injury history.

But he's not a semi-big name. Maybe his no-hitter has his name more out there but that was also almost a half a decade ago now.

Brad Penny, Jamie Moyer, or Barry Zitto

Edinson Volquez.

It is Edinson Volquez.

Wow.

[Confirmed by MLB Network.]

Doesn't matter, he's out for most of 2010 anyways and he'll be serving his suspension while on the DL.

I'm really interested to hear what it was. Given his rehab I'm guessing HGH.

Does anyone else think the ban should start once he is healthy to return? Makes a mockery of the 50 game penalty when he cant play anyway

Yes. I'm glad others have immediately realized this. Embarrassing.

However, Volquez is going to lose around $120,000 (pro-rated salary) for the 50 days or so. I guess that's a big hit for a club controlled guy.

Agreed.

He's a moron, anyone trying this stuff these days hoping to beat the system is a moron. I can't believe the ban would begin until he's healthy to play would it? What kind of punishment is that? Anyway it should be a lifetime ban even for first offenders, that's the ONLY way you will ever stamp this out, make the punishment for getting caught so severe that nobody would even consider taking the risk.

I believe people will still try to get past it, with new types of PEDs and all that come out may be undetected for a while.

I don't really see how you can fault someone for doing what ever they can to play the game.

Not saying he should have taken steroids, but I understand. [/Chris Rock]

Also I remember one of our prospects being injured but having a PED suspension and there being questions if the suspension counted while he was on the DL, so I guess that answers that. I can't even remember who it is now though.

I don't fault them either.

I think the pitcher suspended while on the DL was Hnery Owens.. but not sure.
