Posted July 2, 201014 yr The know it all Mets announcer kept going on and on about how Hanley's swing is way too long - much longer than it used to be. Hanley was slow on a few pitches right down the middle of the plate. Then again, I think most of our hitters have very long swings and are vulnerable especially on inside pitches. What do you think?
July 2, 201014 yr Hanley pretty much has two swings. On counts he's ahead or 0-0 he has this long swing where it's obvious he's looking to go deep. Then he has this pretty short, quick swing in which he uses when behind in the count and he's looking for a hit. There's nothing wrong with his swing, he's hit over .300 the past 3 seasons and he's looking to make it 4 this year. I feel his main problem is his pitch selection. He quite often takes an 0-0 fastball right over the plate for a strike and swings at a curveball out of the zone next pitch and when he does that his swing looks ugly and long. Mainly he's had a tendency to swing and offspeed pitches out of the zone and pitchers have progressively thrown more offspeed stuff to him but he makes up for it by usually drilling any fastball he gets over the plate for a basehit or a lot more. Overall his swing is beautiful and should win him a few more batting titles down the road, he just needs to continually adjust his approach and the way pitchers are trying to avoid giving him pitches to hit.
July 2, 201014 yr Of the things I worry about with Hanley, swing is not one of them (except for RISP, but he's been improving dramatically at that in recent weeks). The ESPN announcers openly questioned his desire to play 100 percent all the time.
July 2, 201014 yr Hanley has one of the smoothest/prettiest swings you will see in the MLB. While the effort issue remains a problem and probably will remain an issue for quite a while, mechanics and his swing aren't and won't be. Sometimes he does refuse to take outside pitches the other way, but nearly all hitters do that.

Believe it or not he's actually very good at taking pitches the other way and way better then he was a couple of seasons ago. I believe 5 or 6 of his homeruns this season are to the opposite field and he has a total of 15 extra basehits the other way.
July 2, 201014 yr I'm not very concerned with a guy hitting .296/.382/.495 even if he has batted (combined) around .325 the past two years. So he's missing a single a week and a double every other week? Guys have lower years than others (David Wright).

All I'm saying is Hanley tends to get lazy when batting at times. He has the raw power and hand eye coordination where 99% of the time he can get away with it.
July 2, 201014 yr The Mets announcers must be paid to find random flaws in opposing players. It's almost a neccessity in order to keep Mets fans happy

Sometimes as an observer you get frustrated with him/his lack of effort, then you look at his stats, and you notice he's still producing like the best SS in the game. Shows how talented he is.
