Murphy has plenty of experience at 3rd throughout his career but he's not going to put up solid numbers offensively to where he can be an everyday starter.

He plays good defense and should be a great bench player for us but Morrison is the answer.

The expectations are pretty high for that type of position, and on top of that if we don't have Uggla a couple more years we are gonna need another legitimate power bat because Stanton alone is not gonna get it done and Dominguez & Maybin don't seem like they'll ever be more than average players in power production.

I think that's the reason why the team wants to re-sign Uggla to a long-term deal. They know that his proven power in the lineup is valuable.

 

Basically, the lack of power you're getting from the power positions (RF excluded), you're going to continue to get from the middle infield. Then you have good .OBP guys like Morrison, Gaby, and Coghlan (I'm going to assume this is a fluke year for Coghlan...a sophmore slump because he's never K'd/had this bad of a K/BB ratio before in his life). That only leaves CF as a question mark, and you hope Maybin can just provide value, somehow. If he pans out fully, great; if not, at least be valuable, somehow. I think the future lineup is fine. The pitching (specifically starting pitching) is the question mark.

You guys thought Cantu was the only player with a sucky day. Ryan Theriot in Chicago had himself a rough 2 error game including a pop up he lost in the sun. At the plate he was 1-3 with 2 K's and when he did get a hit he was caught stealing.

Cantu is not worth much, regardless of their situation. They don't even want Cantu as a starter; I think they want him to platoon at 1B. The return won't be all that good. Just getting rid of Cantu, however, makes this team better. Sort of like Mike Jacobs when we traded him...only we were fortunate enough to trade with a dumbass team like the Royals who gave us a Leo Nunez in return. That's the reason the Royals haven't won in years. Not every organization is that dumb.

That might be an outlier, I wouldn't figure Gaby's success to mirror what Morrison would do if promoted. It's just a bit unreasonable and unfair to the guy.

Well, Gaby was able to hit .289 and 16 home runs, a .849 OPS. He right now is hitting .304 and is on pace for 15 home runs, with a .843 OPS. It's actually shocking how close his big league numbers are to his minors numbers.

That's because he's actually overachived a bit this year. Based on his career minor league #'s, it's likely that he won't maintain the .340 .BABIP that he currently has. Realistically, he's probably not an .843 .OPS guy, in terms of his long-term projection.

 

I think it's been a pleasant surprise to most that he has a near .800 .OPS against right-handed pitching this year.

He is, and wrist injuries can actually impact a player's power for quite a while after he has recovered. But if that's still hurting his power in AAA this year, its going to be no different in the majors.
