Zephyrs extend affiliate agreement

Featured Replies

The New Orleans Zephyrs and Florida Marlins have agreed to a two-year extension of their player development contract, running through the end of the 2012 season. "We are pleased to continue our relationship with the Florida Marlins," said Mike Schline, Zephyrs General Manager. "We are proud of the role we play in the Marlins' commitment to developing their young players while striving for excellence on the field and in the community, and could not be happier to partner with a wonderful organization for another two years."

The Marlins will continue to provide the players and coaching personnel for the Zephyrs. The clubs signed the original two-year agreement in September 2008, after the Marlins had spent six years with their Triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque, while the Zephyrs had been affiliated with the Washington Nationals and New York Mets in the previous two-year cycles.

"The Florida Marlins are excited to continue our affiliation with the New Orleans Zephyrs through the 2012 season," said Brian Chattin, Marlins Director of Player Development. "We have enjoyed our partnership with the Zephyrs' front office as well as the community of New Orleans during the past two years and greatly appreciate the support we have received from Zephyrs fans throughout the area. We are happy to have New Orleans as the home for our Triple-A club and look forward to growing this partnership in the years ahead."

In the two years of the affiliation, 10 Zephyrs have gone on to make their Major League debuts with the Marlins, including last season's National League Rookie of the Year, Chris Coghlan, and a leading candidate for this season's Rookie of the Year, Gaby Sanchez.

Sucks that there are no AAA or Low A teams in Florida. It would've been nice to have our A, AA and AAA affiliates in Florida

There already is a low A team in Florida, the GCL rookies in Jupiter.

So you can see Rookies, High A and AA all within the state, when I go to Jax this weekend I'll complete seeing all three again this year!

I think he meant literally low A, like the Sally or Midwest.

Yea, that's what I meant.

Not a clown at all. By all accounts, the stadium is mediocre by AAA standards and the team gits pathetic fan support(they have had roughly 20 games this year with under 3000 in attendance). New Orleans is where teams who had bad luck signing a PCL or IL team to a PDC go when there are no other options and leave the first chance they get.

move the AAA team to Ft Lauderdale stadium! there's a baseball park there just sitting, rotting.

I have speculated they should sell the Hammerheads to the Orioles and let them take up spring training there as well as affiliate, the Marlins take over the Orioles Carolina League affiliate the Frederick Keys and move their spring training to the soon to be abandoned City of Palms Park.

I believe the Orioles complex was owned by Fort Lauderdale executive (the tiny airport in the back). Now I'm pretty sure a soccer group has bought the complex and is going to do something with it.

Actually they're building a badass waterpark there, Schlitterbahn is doing it.

So a waterpark there and one across from Sun Life Stadium???? WOW, do I know where to spend some time

just wondering but why can we never get a team in the international league. it seems all aorund a better league for prospects and not as much of a hitters league
