An Incredibly Cute Article on the Marlins

What is the article is not true?

Loria traded away a HOFer because he was too stupid to lock him up early - like TB did with Longoria - and too cheap to pay the market rate later and got NOTHING for that HOF except payroll relief.

If the Marlins had not dumped Olsen and Willingham for nothing (Bonifacio) after 2008, they would have made the playoffs last year with Josh in LF, Cogs at 3B and Cantu remaining at 1B. And they took a million and half savings rather than keep Arthur Rhodes.

They also let a terrific left handed pinch hitter and versitile bench player Gload) go to save a million bucks in salary.

Any team that has David Samson involved with baseball decisions opens itself up for criticism.

In all honesty, are you really a Marlins fan?

Rabid

But honestly, not so much of the front office

Or of the owner and his children

For the most part, I agree with the article. I think the first paragraph was a little harsh, and calling the cubs managerial position as one of the top spots in baseball is a bit of a stretch, but other than that, I agree with them. Loria needs to put up the money, and stay out of the game. f he doesn't want to do it that way, then he has made a bad investment. Think about it...we stay pretty competitive, even with as bad as we look sometimes, we stay competitive until late aug, early sep, most of the time. If he would spend an extra 15-20mil, that does two things...brings in a few vets that can get us over the hump, which in turn would put butts in the seats. Also, he wouldn't be hassled anymore about being so cheap. But when it's all said and done, If we make the playoffs, an extra 15-20mil would be worth the investment, and then some, will the revenue it would draw. I, frankly, am ready to get him the hell out of there. We need Mark Cuban....he seems to want a team pretty bad.

No way Loria sells this team. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of him and would love an owner that spends more, but it doesn't seem likely.

Although, If I recall correctly, he wouldn't settle for an agreement with the city that would've prevented him from selling the team for a prolonged period of time after the stadium was built, which could be interpreted many ways.

Didn't read the article but as far as fan interest it's the Dolphins and then the Marlins and then the Heat. I haven't seen the TV ratings lately but in past years the Marlins ratings blew away the Heat ratings. But unfortunately among the local radio hosts and sports columnists it's all just Dolphins and Heat so there's no Marlins coverage except for the beat writers and they are not good at all.

The Marlins have seen their ratings take a 12% dive this year according to this article: http://www.sportsbus...m/article/66312

The Marlins and Heat are also tied in attendance for this most recent season (the Marlins averaged 114 more fans this season) which is pretty lousy when you consider 24 MLB teams average more than the best NBA team. And I fully expect the Heat to surpass the Marlins easily in the upcoming season when it comes to this statistic.

I do think it is still all about the Fins and Hurricanes as long as they are relevant down here in S. Fla.

Looking at that website it looks like the Heat's ratings in the 2nd half of this past season were in the 2.50 to 2.60 range (*) so the Marlins ratings of 3.05 early this season are about 20% higher than the Heat's. The Marlins are more popular.

(*) look at 4, 5 and 6 in these results.

A half of a point is not that big of a deal since if you work it out, that is around 4,000-6,000 households, also if you look at the numbers. You have to remember for about half of its season MLB does not compete with any other major sport on TV. I am sure across the board NBA ratings compared to MLB ratings are pretty poor if you look at the local broadcast regular season numbers. It is just a different beast in a very different context. Beyond that though, less people seem to watch TV in the summer, since, again if you look at the math, the Heat pull in a lower rating, but comparable households.

That is why I think the trends are important here, and the Marlins are going down, and I think it would be hard to say that the Heat will not enjoy more eyes on the tube and butts in the seats. We can look at jersey number sales, for example. I am pretty sure just between Bosh, LeBron, and Wade, that those three have outsold the entire Marlins team this year (with Lebron, Wade, and Bosh, currently 1,2, and 5 in NBA jersey sales). And come next year the Heat will probably average more fans in attendance than the Marlins. From all indications the Heat will sell out a majority of their games this season, which means they will average just about 20,000 a night, something the Marlins haven't done since 2005.

Like I said, I don't think the Heat have surpassed the Fins, but I think it is silly to think they haven't passed the Marlins by now, or just won't in the upcoming season. It probably won't even be close.

I know the Marlins have had years with ratings in the 4s so the Heat will have to get a huge jump percentage wise to get that high.. what do you think they'll get next year?

Well, the operative word there is "had," as in not any longer. And again, the ratings number is not representative of how many eyeballs are actually watching the games on TV.

As for next year, I can almost guarantee more people will watch the Heat nationwide since they will have 30+ nationally televised games. The Heat are now a national brand, not just a regional one. Popularity cannot be simply broken down to local television ratings. It has to do with merchandise sold, tickets sold, etc.

Heck, if you want a pretty impartial judge of the "popularity" of the two teams, just check out the long term Google Trends comparing the Marlins and Heat: http://www.google.co...date=all&sort=0

It was pretty close until recently, but even when it was "close," I see the Heat to be of more interest than the Marlins more often than the inverse. At the best of times the Marlins were just about equal with the Heat by this measure.

It is okay for the Marlins to be the 3rd team in the market.

The Dolphins have done a lot lately...

And the Marlins have?

Done pretty much the same thing. Only with more championships.

That was 03, though. I mean, this decade they have been more successful because of that WS, but don't act like the Dolphins have done nothing this whole decade.

To be fair, it was probably the Phins' worst decade of all time.

The article also says that the Marlins got a manager that has no experience managing anywhere. Yeah right. Edwin has managed in almost every level of the organization and he was a major league player.

Obviously. But, we still had some pretty solid seasons. The beginning and end of this decade weren't so bad. Just the middle, when Ricky retired. You also have to acknowledge that we've been a very good team in almost every decade.

Depends upon if you consider 2003 lately. If you consider 1973 lately, then you are an idiot.

I love the Dolphins. But the rationale used above means that the Marlins have been a very good team every decade of existence. The Dophins were not "very good" in the 90s. They were well coached with a great quarterback, but were not a legitimate world championship contender at any point after 1985. The Marlins are 27 years younger and have as many World Championships.

What have they done? Make the playoffs a couple of times and do nothing in the playoffs? My point is that they've done nothing special. At least not compared to the Marlins.

True. But you said lately, and I took that as the last couple of seasons. Neither team has done anything special, but the Dolphins made the playoffs and won the division, at least.

All things considered, I think the Marlins organization has done a better job to field a competitive team.

Consider these things (at least my opinion):

1. It's easier to make the playoffs in football. (16 games is less of a sample than 162, and football also has 6 playoff spots per conference, as opposed to baseball which only has 4 playoff spots per league)

2. Salary cap. (Dolphins payroll compares to the rest of the league, while the Marlins front office is playing an unfair game)

This isn't an excuse because as everyone knows...I personally have no problem with the Yankees playing by the rules, etc., etc. I'd love to be the Marlins GM to see the kind of results I could produce with a low payroll. But at the end of the day, it is what it is. There's currently no fairness in the sport, with no salary cap.

Those two important factors taken into account, and I don't see why the Marlins are often considered the laughingstock of the league/sports by many ignorant people in sports media. But whatever, it's an irrelevant discussion, and opinions are like assholes; everybody has one.

Defenitely.

Plus, you have to consider the fact that we traded away a future HOFer for two prospects that have done nothing, yet we're in the hunt for the playoffs every year. Remarkable job by this FO.

That's not the reason he was traded away. Talk to people in the FO and you get a little better understanding of things.

The Marlins look for cohesiveness on the team. Miggy was basically a club house cancer. Maybe a bit of a strong term, but the best I could come up with. He needed to be on a team with far more veterans to keep his ego in check. That wasn't going to happen here. Not to mention he played a horrendous 3B. Imagine the tantrum that would have happened if we had moved him from 3B to 1B a couple weeks into a season. Or do you not remember the mini tantrum when he was put in the OF when Mikey came back off the DL? It wasn't highly publisized, but it was there. The Tigers had some pretty out spoken vets on that team that would have, or did, take Miggy aside (or out back) if he had started with the prima donna crap there. Imagine Sheff's (just one example) reaction had Miggy said "F... the vets" like he did here once.

Another example.....Olsen was traded more for the same reason than for his production. Almost always late to show up on game days, and then usually wearing a Cubs jersey when he did show up. His attitude was terrible. His off field antics were just the tip of the iceberg. But then, he was good friends with AJ when he was here. Remember the AJ fiasco? To this orginazation, attitude means alot. I happen to agree with that. Almost anyone that owns or runs any biz would also agree. Bad attitudes are contagious.

I wish Miggy well. And from what little I have watched of him, he has turned into a pretty decent 1B. But pumping more $$$ into that inflated ego would have torn this entire team apart. Like the trade or not, that was a good move for the Marlins and a great move for Miggy's career.

That was not the reason Miguel Cabrera was traded. He was traded because the team, supposedly, couldn't afford to keep him. Based on your reasoning, they wouldn't have kept Hanley, either. Your post is absolute nonsense.
