November 17, 201015 yr CF Upton LF Coghlan SS Hanley RF Stanton 1B Sanchez 2B Infante C Buck 3B Dominguez P Infante Cogz Hanley Upton Mike Gaby Buck Dominguez or Boni
November 17, 201015 yr CF Upton LF Coghlan SS Hanley RF Stanton 1B Sanchez 2B Infante C Buck 3B Dominguez P Upton wouldn't lead-off. I'd expect Coghlan or Infante to lead off. With that line-up, I'd put Bonifacio in CF, have the best outfield defense in baseball, live with the drop in offense from that one position, and let Dominguez develop for another year. Infante ® Coghlan (L) Hanley ® Upton ® Stanton ® Sanchez ® Buck ® Dominguez/Bonifacio (R/Switch)
November 17, 201015 yr J-Up could play CF, no? The only reason he didn't in 'Zona was Chris Young. It would be Coghlan in LF, J-Up in CF, Giancarlo in RF, Omar at 2B. Perfect.

November 17, 201015 yr LoMo ain't going anywhere. Gaby, Ricky, Badenhop, Nunez, Hensley, Sanabia - Take any three. Lolza OK, any four. And throw in Villanueva and Koehler and Ceda. OK, any five. Those first two have no value, and Ceda is in "premier throw in" category with all his arm/off field troubles. Seriously, you don't get Justin Upton with a lot of good spare parts. You need to give up Logan or Stanton and a starter for them to even entertainment this.

Not even some prospects. Give them Badenhop or Veras, someone we are going to DFA, or a relative non-prospect. We don't need to give anything else if we're giving up 6 years of Morrison and 2 years of Nolasco with some RP innings to sprinkle in.

November 17, 201015 yr I would trade Morrison and Nolasco for Upton in a second. And then use the money ear marked for Nolasco (about $6 million), use that with additional Dan Uggla money ($3 million) to sign a right handed starting pitcher. Can anyone say Pavano? Losing Morrison hurts, but we'd have the best corner outfielders in baseball. Literally. Gaby is going to be a solid pro, and we are developing Yelich now for 3-4 years down the road to replace Gaby basically. This ain't a big deal. Upton is amazing. We'd be so lucky. Add in Nunez too, and just take back some stuff in A ball. This is a no brainer if they can use the Nolasco/Uggla leftover money on a right handed starter, which they easily could do in my opinion. I could be wrong...but won't some of that $6 million ear marked for Nolasco or Uggla money have to go to make up the difference between Morrison and Upton? Forgive me, if I'm way off on this one. It was reported payroll will be $53-55. Currently, if we go in as is right now, payroll will be about $46.5, so we have around $6.5-8 to spend right now. Minus Nolasco, who is ear marked around $6 through arbitration, we have $12.5-14 to spend. Upton is $4.25 in 2011, so we're talking an $8-10 million pitcher to replace Nolasco. That is easily a quality 180-200 innings with this market. The side effect is - Sanabia/West is your 5th starter, you can't afford Ohman/another veteran lefty and have to go with Richardson/Jennings/Veteran Vagabond along with Dunn in your pen, and you have to have two club controlled options on the bench versus a lefty. So to get Upton, you sacrifice a little depth, but it literally is the last guy in your bullpen, two last guys on your bench, and 5th starter. Not exactly your key performers. Thank you very much for the in depth look. While I haven't posted very much in the past I've always read your payroll/roster posts for further insight. That clears up a lot for me.

Seriously, you don't get Justin Upton with a lot of good spare parts. You need to give up Logan or Stanton and a starter for them to even entertainment this. Now hold on... Gaby has value for sure. Compared to superstar potential of Justin Upton? Upton is 4 years younger than Gaby and has serious serious growth potential. Gaby is who he is, a nice solid bat. Nolasco, Gaby, and X isn't getting this done. And if I'm wrong, let's throw a parade for Beinfest for stealing Upton. And don't get me wrong, I like Gaby. I will be happy with him as our 1B for a few seasons if this trade happens. But Justin Upton? Are we serious? What a beast.
November 17, 201015 yr There is no way the Diamonbacks look at this without one of our top OF prospects. I think it's easy to see that LoMo is the one to go.

We don't need to give anything else if we're giving up 6 years of Morrison and 2 years of Nolasco with some RP innings to sprinkle in. I don't think LoMo will ever reach J-Up status even though I'm the biggest LoMo fan there's out there...Ricky can be replaced by Sanabia/Pavano and we are pretty much set in the pen even though I do like Ceda. But you are not getting J-Up for nothing...

But you are not getting J-Up for nothing... Morrison and Nolasco is a lot. I don't know what else you give because at some point it's not worth it. Nunez? Sure if it makes or breaks it, but if we're dipping into Dunn, West, Sanabia, James, Hand, Dominguez, and the real minor league talent pool, this will get risky. If the deal is Morrison, Nolasco, Ceda, and Badenhop, that is a no brainer 4-1 deal. Totally serious. Just use the money on a free agent starter, and we've traded Morrison and some relievers for Justin Upton. Win.
November 17, 201015 yr Interesting question: Would you trade Stanton for Upton, straight up? Because if it's not Morrison going, it's Stanton. Stanton + Upton > Upton + Morrison. Don't get greedy, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

November 17, 201015 yr Stanton is Upton on steroids potentially. Better arm, as good range/speed, better HR potential, younger.

November 17, 201015 yr Stanton is Upton on steroids potentially. Better arm, as good range/speed, better HR potential, younger. And MUCH cheaper.

I'd trade Gaby for Upton in a heartbeat, I'm not stupid. But dont say that he has no value. He definitely has value. Value enough to make a real difference in such a trade.

And should for the Marlins Valid point. Should have replaced OF with "hitting". Not very familiar with the Dbacks system...but with this trade and my rudimentary knowledge of their system I think they would also have OF holes. Either way...to get it done it's Stanton or LoMo...LoMo goes.
November 17, 201015 yr I wouldn't because Stanton has 2 more cheap years and is 2 years younger. Talent-wise, though, it's darn close from what I've seen.

Don't get greedy, you can't have your cake and eat it too. I don't think I move Stanton in a deal for anyone not named Longoria, Zimmerman, Votto, or C. Gonzalez.... I really think that's the whole list. Maybe Wright. No pitchers.
