Marlins owner promises more activity

10 minutes ago by FOXSports

Marlins owner Jeffey Loria promised further activity Wednesday at the GM meetings, "stay tuned."

But in all likelihood, the Marlins probably have made their biggest moves -- trading second baseman Dan Uggla and reaching agreement with free-agent catcher John Buck.

The team, according to one major-league source, has about $3 million to $4 million left to spend.

Such a figure would not be enough for the team to sign a free-agent starting pitcher such as right-hander Carl Pavano.

However, it could be enough for them to continue supplementing their bullpen. The team has traded for four relievers in the past week.

"We're always looking for pitching," Loria said. "We want this bullpen to be a tough one. We're still not done there."

-- Ken Rosenthal

Maybe we can get a real closer?

AND a real center fielder

That's the key. The last thing I want is Bonifacio in the lineup, and Dominguez is a kid that I don't think we should rush. He's no Stanton or LoMo at the plate, he needs a 500 more minor league at-bats before considering a callup. A nice one year rental in center is what we need, put Cogs at third and Infante at second. If Beinfest can get that rental in center and maybe find another Joe Bloe closer that surfaces from nowhere, we're contenders.

capozzi just quoted beinfest as saying that he sees a chance that we will get a starting pitcher but also said that he thinks we have "really good players" and could go play today.......uhhh i disagree there Admin go get a center fielder and maybe well be ready to play.

I just love it when they throw that in there. Rumors should never be taken as fact. And yet it is so easy to fall into that trap.

Loria seems to be on a mission. The press, "experts", made him look pretty silly after last pre season's quotes of him saying that team should make the play offs. He's embarassed, ticked off, and now is definetly hands on this off season. The last time I remember him being this involved was before the 2003 season. Remember that extra $10 mil he came up with for a 1 year rental?

Where the hell is José Ceda? He's a very young guy that I've been hoping will develop into a solid bullpen arm for the future. He should be at that age to break-out. Any news?

Payroll is basically at $51 if they make no moves right now. Higher if they keep Paulino, Veras, and Nunez. How high do you think it's going, exactly?

not sure what you mean. He came up for a cup of coffee late last season, I'm sure he's in the mix for a spot this year. After all the trades are done with though he may need to beat out some competition in spring training. If Leo gets dealt that will free up a spot. If we bring in a vet starting pitcher I imagine Sanabia gets bumped to the pen, might make Badenhop expendable.
