Jayson Stark - Baseball's All Underrated Team

Overhed

There was a discussion on Reddit about this not too long ago. I claim, and have claimed for years, that Adam Dunn is the most underrated player in baseball. Starks basically made the argument I make.

I don't see how someone who can't play 1B = underrated 1B. Underrated DH, sure.

He was just following your lead. Hell, ESPN is the best Rabbethan-Lead-Following network in the world!

I didn't read the article, but in my opinion, Ryan Zimmerman is the most underrated player in baseball.

He consistently puts up solid offensive numbers and plays elite defense on top of that. And yet he rarely makes the All-Star team and nobody ever talks about him because he plays for a last place team.

It's hard for me to defend Dunn when his WAR numbers are pretty uninspiring due to his poor defense. He might be the most underrated offensive player in the game, but not overall player.

Castro is not underrated. Right now he's not even good. Dunn is a good player but is actually quite overrated. Braun is also a good player and he gets the credit he deserves. Zimmerman is very good but I wouldn't say he's underrated. From early on in his career he was getting accolades. I would say his first couple of years he was overrated but now he gets the credit he deserves.

TL;DR: no such thing as underrated.

Castro had a .300 BA which was 10th in the league, sure but a .755 OPS which is bleh even for a rookie especially when you consider that away from Wrigley, he only hit .258 and OPSed .639. Then on top of that, he was a -12.

Yeah, not underrated.

If he wanted an underrated SS, the answer is Alexei Ramirez.

Mike Stanton and Chris Coughlan. Annibal and Volstad

Marlins for MLB all Underrated team?

under-performing, maybe. they were a sub-.500 team last year. we should be better this year, definitely. but we're in the same division as the Phillies :confused

Your sarcasm meter is broken.

I'd make the argument of Starks already hadn't.

Ain't nothing wrong with a 20-year-old shortstop with a .347 OBP. Do I think he should have been on the list (especially considering he was bad defensively)? No, but to say he was "bleh" or "not even good" is a bit of a pessimistic stretch.

Also gotta love that Alexei had a .744 OPS and .313 OBP last year, lower than the guy you described as "bleh". He's 29 and hasn't had a season with an OBP nearly as good as Castro had.

Not making excuses, because we definitely underperformed, but has anyone else realized that Bob Davidson literally made us a sub-.500 team with the one win he stole from us?

+9 and he hits HRs.

He doesn't hit enough HRs to negate how horrifically bad he is at getting on base. As far as hitting goes, he's like Mike Jacobs at SS. Yes, he can field, but all in all him and Starlin are probably worth the same.

Yeah, probably many of us have, but it really was just a stick in the eye at the end of a mediocre year and will fade into "them's the rules" trivia.

I look at this this way. 2010 resulted in the FO refusing to overpay for Uggla (good riddance to his so-so defense and miscellaneous brain-farts.) 2010 resulted in the FO figuring out that the BP needed serious help. 2010 resulted in the FO getting Perry Hill back. 2010 resulted in the FO picking up Buck and Vasquez.

2010 also resulted in getting rid of Ross. Now Ross, who after claiming that he wanted to play forever for the Marlins, claimed to want to play forever for the Giants and only got a one-year deal for '11. Next thing you know, after an entire year of his usual mediocre play in '11 he'll probably be elsewhere in '12 and bad-mouthing the Giants.

"Yeah, they gave me away by not signing me long-term, I'm invaluable."

:lol
