November 26, 200322 yr As of Nov 18th... from mlb.com: As part of his quest to return to the forefront of the Cubs' minds when they begin Spring Training in Arizona next February, Choi is playing in the Venezuelan Winter League for the Magallanes Navigators. Through 18 games, Choi was hitting .328 with four home runs and 13 RBIs. He has scored 13 runs and struck out 21 times in 64 at-bats.
November 26, 200322 yr He sounds like a guy I know. Derrek Lee. The K's come with the walks. but for minus 6.7 millions
November 26, 200322 yr That's waaaay too mank K's for winter ball. Wait till you see Lee K with bases loaded and game on the line . . .
November 26, 200322 yr Who cares about strikeouts if they're productive? Sammy Sosa stuck out once every 3.62 AB's this year, Thome once every 3.12 AB's. Strikeouts are common place in the league now, it's not like we're gonna ask the guy to lead off.
November 26, 200322 yr Billy F'n Beane would have you believe K's arent important. Basically, only OPS is. I disagree...but I can live with a high amount of K's for now. But Choi must halve his K total if he is to become a successful major leaguer - and there is no indication that this cant be done. Look at Enc and Lee, they both were able to cut down on their strikeouts. This guy is going to be an excellent hitter. He has got very good power, and being a lefty is going to have lots of success at JRS. I want to see him use the whole field - shoot the other way - because to center and LF, there is a lot of field to work with. He can turn on a ball and put it in the seats in RF. I cant wait to see him in action.
November 26, 200322 yr i'm curious, but does anyone know how long we have choi signed for? player development for a major leaguer is fine and dandy, but i'd hate to see us wait for him to grow and then lose him to free agency just when he's about to bust out.
November 26, 200322 yr Who cares about strikeouts if they're productive I've never heard of a productive strikeout. Sammy Sosa stuck out once every 3.62 AB's this year That statement goes against your cause. Sammy Sosa always striekouts when you need him.
November 26, 200322 yr I've never heard of a productive strikeout. I meant if the player is productive, not if the strikeout is. That statement goes against your cause.? Sammy Sosa always striekouts when you need him. Fine, forget Sosa then. Thome is the better example anyway since, like Choi, he strikes out a ton, but also walks a ton. And beyond that, it's not like the "young power hitter who strikes out too much" is a new thing. That descibes 75% of young power hitters. 250 major league at-bats does not a player make. He's got plenty of time to develop.
November 26, 200322 yr AVG, OBP, and SLG are useful stats. i'm not convinced that strikeouts mean much at all. if you have a guy with .300 AVG and .375 OBP, do you really give a s*** if he strikes out like no tomorrow? i'd rather have his outs come in the form of K's than GIDP's
November 26, 200322 yr Maybe Choi isnt so bad after all huh folks? The K's worry me, but other than that...
November 26, 200322 yr a .333 strikeout average is pretty mindboggling though... but it's still better than my little league average of .700 or so
November 26, 200322 yr UPDATE: Hee Seop is now hitting .303 (23-76) with 4 HR, 14 RBI, 11 BB, and 24 Ks. His OBP is .382 and his SLG is .553. See, his strikeouts are down below 33%. He's ALREADY getting better. :thumbup Source: http://www.baseballamerica.com:81/today/St...s_VWL_mag.shtml

November 29, 200322 yr That's waaaay too mank K's for winter ball. A strikeout is .003x worse than a ground out and .005x worse than a fly out. You people look at the strikeout as the devil when it's really not a big deal if he gets on base as much as he does.
