It's also been pretty much established that this whole ordeal has been a "dirty little secret" that all of the coaches and players heard murmurings about but never really discussed in order to preserve the prestige of the program. Any coach who presides over something like that (whose intervention could have prevented more victims) does not deserve to finish out the season.

The other thing is that if he had resigned immediately like he should have he would not have gotten the board involved at all. That might have prevented most of those idiots from rioting. There is animosity on the Penn State campus, but while it should be directed toward the university administration for allowing something so despicable to go unreported, it's been idiotically directed toward the board from firing Paterno. If Paterno had all of his marbles and wasn't an idiot he would have realized that it would spare Penn State a lot of trouble by resigning immediately. Otherwise he's just a distraction.
November 10, 201114 yr I haven't followed this closely so with that said I don't underatand how the graduate assisstant gets a free pass here. He's the one that witnessed the crime and did nothing to stop it and didn't even call the police. I also don't understand how two people above Paterno get charged but Paterno does not. Also, if Guy 3 tells you that Guy 2 told him that Guy 1 told him that he (Guy 1) witnessed a crime but did not report it to the police, are you (Guy 4) supposed to report to the police what Guy 1 didn't deemed reportable to the police? The answer is obvious.

November 10, 201114 yr Sportswriter Mark Madden went on WEEI in Boston and reported a rumor that alleged child molester Jerry Sandusky would pimp out boys to rich donors. "I hear a rumor that there will be a shocking development from the Second Miles Foundation ... That Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors." Madden claims it's being investigated by "two prominent columnists." We'd say this is ridiculous, and that you should take it with a grain of salt. But Madden actually wrote about Sandusky for the Beaver County Times six months ago — long before the scandal blindsided everyone else this week. You rarely get jail time for failure to interfere in someone else's criminal act. That's just the law here. I bet state legislatures start implementing statutes that say, in effect: You are guilty of a misdemeanor if you are a substantially certain eyewitness to statutory rape yet fail either to overtly interfere or to report it directly to the police. This duty supplements any other preexisting statutory duties.

The students will still probably riot because it would seem like they forced him to retire. I also don't believe he did anything wrong to warrant him having to retire or get fired. There is a month left In the season. He should have been allowed to finish out the year.

I don't agree. Resigning immediately may not have prevented the riots. It would not have solved anything.
November 10, 201114 yr Author why would you want Paterno to finish out the season anyway? He'd be absolutely smothered by this story. Even as a health matter it would be terrible for him. The press, the reputation of the school, the team, that's a lot to have to shoulder, and everyone looks to him. The stress would damn near kill him. You think he'd get the hero's treatment for each game the rest of the season? Can you imagine when the team travels to Ohio State or something? Just an aside, but as a Canes fan now I'm worried they're going to go after Al Golden to replace him.

I've felt the pepperspray after some home game jubilation McQueary should be the next to go 100% unacceptable to treat the molestation of a young child like some kind of administrative error ...... they didn't catch some cheating in a class or smoking pot in the shower

It's really plain that he's trying to strongarm them. His contract was apparently up after this year anyway, so it was utterly obvious he would not be there next season. He's trying to make their decisions for them, under the guise of making it easy for them - that's obnoxious. It also implies that he thinks they were maybe going to consider bringing him back and that letting him go is/was a tough decision. That earns an eyeroll.

November 10, 201114 yr He's definitely not Paterno understood what was coming down the pike when they cancelled his news conference and the rumors started floating (that his son strongly denied) He tried to get in front of it and force his way onto the trustees by stating that he would retire at the end of the season - they came back and stated that he will be leaving now. The extra jab in there about how the trustees shouldn't dedicate any time to discussing his status is also fairly telling

He would slowly ramp up how comfortable the boys were with physical contact, check to see their tolerance for abuse, provide lavish gifts and exploit the troubles in their life They say the list is up to 20 now and I would be shocked if it didn't shoot up even more as more people feel enabled to speak their story and understand that they are not alone and not to blame The guy is a real monster and I'm sure that a lot more will come out now that the lid is off ...... I'm just not ready to jump to some of the other items, even though that reported has been at the lead of the story

His laptop was found in his car with the hard drive missing. He was never found.
