He allowed Sandusky to have access to restricted areas within the school even after finding out about the shower incident. Joe Pa may have reported it to his superiors, but he did nothing to stop Sandusky from continuing to lure children for sex even after he knew that Sandusky was doing something of a "sexual nature" with children.

 

Joe Pa isn't the worst person in this situation, but he comes off as pretty damn naive in this whole thing. As a person of authority, failing to report this incident to the police or do anything to keep Sandusky away from children is a lot worse than a fireable offense.

I mean Sandusky had goddamn access to the school weight room all the way until just last week when all this broke out, AND he was allowed to work with the Second Mile organization that worked EXCLUSIVELY WITH CHILDREN even after two children admitted to detectives in a Pennsylvania district that Sandusky molested them and the shower incident. There were multiple multiple warning signs, and nobody at Penn State did a damn thing. They allowed him to work with Second Mile until 2010, when he resigned (wasn't even fired).

I agree. With Joepa, I think it was more of a moral issue, not a legal issue. He did the right thing by telling his superiors first, but messed up when he decided not to tell the police when they decided to sweep this incident under the rug. I don't know what he was thinking on that one.

 

Still, I don't think he should have been fired. He's done so much for that school, he should have been given the chance to finish it out.

Dim, no where in that link did it say Paterno allowed him to have access. I'm pretty sure Paterno can't do that, anyway.

 

Edit: The article says the the office and weight room were apart of his retirement package.

 

@I Love Me Some FIsh, he didn't just help the football program. Go look at Jared Odrick's tweets. He helped the students there grow into fine young men and women. He helped them in more ways than just football.

The problem is he pretty much put his head in the sand. If you hear in 2002 that somebody you know is molesting children at the school where you coach, it's a moral obligation to watch over that person. Paterno dropped the ball.

Yeah, but they also said many of the restrictions they gave to Sandusky were "hard to enforce".

Paterno didn't put his head in the sand. He told the Athletic Director, Senior Vice President of Business and Finance and the President of the University. They told him they alerted the campus police, who have authority like municipal police officers. People need to stop acting like JoePa just stood there and watched.

2002 was the shower incident. The first two victims were 1998 (with both telling detectives what happened). After that the detectives determined he shouldn't be involved with the Second Mile anymore.

I agree with this. I don't know when that point came, though. He did swear to a grand jury that he didn't know the extent of these issues, so maybe that's why he stayed quiet? I don't know. If it were me, I would have went straight to the police regardless.

Yea... i dunno.. its such uncharted territory. I don't think the PSU board of trustees had any other choice

I mean, I'm not going to say the decision was wrong(although it looks that way now with the riots and the threats of boycotting the Nebraska game), but it's not something I would have done. JoePa is more than just a coach to the students there. He's a legend, and I don't think he did anything to deserve the firing.

 

This is definitely one of the crazier things I have ever seen. And now reports are surfacing that Sandusky is dead.

It's scary think how far this could date back. He's run a foster home since 1977!

I haven't been following this too closely but I keep hearing people say that there are supposed to be "new allegations" coming out soon that are even more disturbing.

I agree. Joe Paterno and Penn State are going to take massive hits on their legacy. A shame, really. All because of one freak.

I don't think he is an idiot for wanting to finish out the season. I think him finishing out the season was the best possible thing to do, IMO.

I think he should've finished the season too. He only has 3 games left plus a bowl game. Maybe if it was September finishing out wouldn't be a god idea. He's being punished for someone else's crime.

Why don't they arrest McCreary, the grad assistant who witnessed the event? He should have gone to the police, not to Joe Pa.

Does anyone have a link for an article or report that states how much Joe Pa knew? I'll hold back judgement until I read that, I haven't had a chance to read anything yet.
