Guy is a gamer, there's no doubt about Miggy's toughness IMO.

Twins pitcher Carl Pavano was target of extortion attempt by high school classmate

SOUTHINGTON, Conn. - Police in Connecticut have searched the home of a high school classmate of Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano while investigating an alleged extortion attempt against Pavano.

A search warrant affidavit obtained by the Record-Journal of Meriden (http://bit.ly/GZBGr8 ) on Wednesday says Pavano's family told police that 36-year-old Christian Bedard of Southington tried to extort money and a luxury SUV from Pavano by threatening to publicly reveal a three-year "emotional and physical relationship" the two had while attending Southington High School.

Southington police seized a laptop and journal from Bedard's home last week, but have not charged him.

Pavano's sister, Michelle DeGennaro says Bedard's claims about a relationship with her brother are false.

Carl Pavano declined to comment, saying it was a legal matter, when asked about the report Thursday at the Twins' Fort Myers spring training complex.

Twins General Manager Terry Ryan, who was in Bradenton, Fla., for an exhibition game, was asked if he's concerned about the story being a distraction for the Twins' Opening Day starter.

"Well, it affects Carl, and we’ll have to see exactly what comes about here,'' Ryan said. "I don’t know enough about it. I haven’t talked to him yet.''

... Is Pavano gay?

When discussing De Aza like some were doing earlier, its really worth noting that this a player we just flat out got rid of, so for him to have any value at all is impressive. Personally, I was a little disappointed he didn't get more of a chance as a backup OFer in 09, as in his small time up here he was having genuinely quality at bats every time, seeing a lot of pitches and working the count. For the Marlins to up and waive him after the year, despite really solid AAA numbers (and remember, he had never even played in AAA before) was disappointing to me.

We all know he had his injury problems, but De Aza was always a guy you just wanted to root for.

He saw 3.58 pitches per plate appearance in 2007 with 6 walks to 37 strikesouts. I don't remember him having genuinely quality at bats everytime.

He was, at best the 6th outfielder on the depth chart in 2009, after Coghlan, Ross, Hermida, Maybin and Carroll. Don't really see where there was room for him to get any chances.

That's because I was talking about 2009.

Oh, 2009, all of 27 plate appearances. Clearly a much better example than 2007 when he had 158 plate appearances.

I'm not claiming it was a large sample size, but gosh, don't you think it possible that in two years a player who had never played above AA before starting in the majors could have progressed? Apparently I guess not.

You're basing your argument on a difference of over 100 plate appearances, in which even the higher number was a small sample size.

I mean, he may have improved.

But there's really not a good argument to make for it.

Need proof? Ok.

2011 - .920 OPS in similar sample size. Also, if I accept your argument that two years doesn't mean anything, then I guess De Aza could have actually produced that two years earlier, in the year I was discussing.

Since the year I talked about, De Aza hasn't hit under .300 in the minors or majors (he only hit .250 in the year I was talking about in the majors). He won't keep that up in the majors, but he has good contact skills and can probably maintain a good BABIP because of his hitting style.

Also, according to the numbers I have in 2009, De Aza saw 4.4 pitches per PA in 2009 (the year I was talking about). That would be among tops in the league in any year, fully supporting my original claim that De Aza was having good plate appearances.

We also had better options both in the starting outfield and in the backup roles in '09 and '10, as Brett Carroll was a far better option as a 4th outfielder than De Aza, plus you had actual prospects in Bryan Petersen and Scott Cousins on their way up.

De Aza had no place in the organization. This is a silly thing.
