Marlins Taking Moneyball Approach?

Featured Replies

I am thinking about the Detroit and LAD trades the marlins made and it got me thinking, are the Marlins trying to take the moneyball approach? We dump 8 million salary to detroit for prospects, and we dump Hanley's salary to LA (idk amount). So, I beg the question, r the marlins taking the moneyball approach?

No we are just making baseball trades. I think alot of people don't completly understand the moneyball approach.

Do you guys think we will trade Johnson to Texas for Mike Olt?

There's a difference in the Moneyball approach where you look for undervalued players, and what the Marlins just did with Hanley, which is trade off and overpaid, underperforming commodity.

This is just as true to the term "Market correction" as it was in 2005. We have players that are either have reached the peak of their value (Anibal/Infante) or are overpaid (Zambrano/Bell/Nolasco/Ramirez). What we're doing is trying to turn some of those overpaid players younger, cheaper players/prospects.

You know the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?"

Well, we are broken, and are doing what they can to fix it.

Marlins aren't taking the Moneyball approach.

And if they don't use the money they freed up from Hanley/Anibal/etc. then you could bet that they'd get absolutely buried by all their supporters.

I'm confident they'll use it.

We got a couple guys we need to extend for a while.

Exactly, I see no reason not to spend the money. . If the FO goes out and does jack sh*t this off season I will official be on the "FO sucks balls fire them" team. Both Joes on twitter aren't answering my question but I think the best thing the Marlns can do is sign Stanton long term quick and the sooner the better.

There's no question in my mind-they'll use the cash.

The only question is whether they'll be able to use it WISELY.

That's a whole other story.

Every big contract they make seems to turn into a big failure.

really? no question? I hope they spend it, yeah, but I reeeeally have my doubts. see: attendance

I don't think they're very big on metrics. They hired an opponent to sabermetrics in Ozzie.

It may not be the most unpopular move ever to unhire him at the end of the season.

Yea everyone has been talking about that. If they don't use it they will lose all of the goodwill of many of the fans and well be back to square one. They can't afford to f*** it up again.
