Stanton's Attitude

Featured Replies

Carlos Gonzalez got 7 years $80 million after a breakout third season where he finished third in the MVP voting. He was 25 when that contract was signed.

Stanton had a very similar style season in 2012 that Gonzalez had in 2010 when he signed the contract. Obviously injuries have hurt Stanton in future contract talks, but given the fact that Stanton is 23 now helps his case for a bigger deal. After all that has happened over the past year, I'd say Stanton would accept a 7 year deal between $80 million and $100 million. I think eventually we see a 7 year, $90 million deal get done this offseason. If we can't get that done, say goodbye to Giancarlo.

I'm sure lou could explain this 1000 times better, considering he is the person who made the original CarGo comp when discussing a possible Stanton extension over the last two seasons.

One more trip to the DL and Stanton won't be very expensive next year and therefore no reason for Loria to trade him.

You explained it pretty well. 7 years at 90 million sounds accurate. If not for his injury issues he might be offered 7/100.

That's what the Marlins wanted, right? Give Stanton some space and let him bond with his new team mates, I just hope he doesn't replace Ricky Nolasco as his BFF with Jeff Mathis.

Seriously...

I'm not sure what your response is trying to say. The Mathis thing was a joke because he's not going to be a key piece on this team moving forward. If you didn't get that and your "seriously" was aghast at my joke then....

As for the rest of it, other people have been giving Stanton s*** for "not caring" or "dialing it in" so isn't it good to see a quickfire tweet after a game? We want him to be as happy and enthusiastic as possible as part of the Marlins.

I meant seriously, like I hope they aren't friends because I wished Mathis off this team a month ago and I still wish him off this team tonight, lol. He is useless besides throwing down runners, which Olivo was OK at with better offense.

Eight years of GM have seen the value of a catcher like Mathis but since he doesn't fare well in fantasy leagues, he is dismissed here.

Says a lot about the fastasy league players here.

Don't get me wrong, I like his defense and game-calling for the most part, but his offense is atrocious, save this one swing today.

Yea, agreed. His defense is fine, I think he is better behind the plate than other haters give him credit for, but his offense is SO bad I would literally rather have Skipworth on the bench. And I HATE Skipworth.

Okay, sweet, that was what I was hoping you meant.

As for the other posts in this thread about Mathis... I see his value in defense and other areas, but Morrison, Dobbs and some others also provide clubhouse leadership. There has to be a line of acceptability with his offense though and, for me, it is .200 and I say the same about Hech. Anything below that just isn't acceptable even if Mathis is 11/16 at throwing out runners.

My original joke, in regards to Stanton's tweet, was that I hope Mathis isn't around for years to come. Some believe the Marlins will be contenders in 2015, some 2016 and some might even think 2014, but I shoot for 2015 and I hope Mathis isn't still on the team then.

As bad as Mathis' offense is, his WAR is higher than Brantly's. Mathis is actually having a great year defensively. Brantly kinda sucks.

The problem with Mathis is that he plays way too much. Hopefully we get a real starting catcher next year.

2015, should be Brantly, Barnes and Realmuto taking duties behind the plate. Barnes can also play second base which makes him an asset if we ever want to move Dietrich to short.

One thing I noticed today about Mathis' swings is that he literally looks like a pitcher taking hacks up there. His front leg bails out a little bit, not nearly as much as Anibal Sanchez did, but it's probably why he strikes out a lot / makes weak contact. Obviously not in that last at bat, but it's just something I noticed today.

Also, 2015 is what I'm saying for at least a winning season, contention if things go really well.

Or let's hope Brantly reaches his potential...?

What exactly do you think his potential is...?
