Henderson Alvarez

Featured Replies

two rehab starts in AA Jax now,

combined he's thrown 14.1 innings, 5 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 13 Ks.

As soon as a Nolasco trade goes down he'll probably come off the DL and move right into the rotation. Looking forward to seeing how he does. Finally getting a chance to see all these guys healthy.

He is coming up regardless of if Nolasco is traded. That was his last rehab start. I would imagine Koehler goes for him then if Nolasco is traded Koehler either comes back or they promote Brian Flynn.

I'm excited to see him pitch. I think he is going to be great with this club. Perfect ballpark for him, and the NL East will help him tremendously...

I saw flynn's last start he is really good, but i think he would be helped by finishing the year in triple a. he had trouble with pitching to the major league prospects, and did not do a very good job mixing up his pitches.

Ya i would agree. He hasnt pitched well in AAA.

We have SOOOOO many starting pitching possiblities over the next two years its a little bit crazy.

Nicolino, Heaney, Desclafini, Flynn, even Chad James to add on to Koehler, Fernandez, Eovaldi, Alvarez, and Turner. We will be in very good position if we can find maybe 1 more infield bat.

Throw in Adam Conley too. Some will wind up in the pen ultimately but will be fun to watch it all get sorted out.

I think Conley is one of those guys that will end up in the pen for the simply fact that he's the worst of the three lefties (Conley, Heaney, Nicolino). It's starting to look like the most competitive arms for the rotation that haven't made it to the big league club are DeSclafani, Nicolino, and Heaney. Put them together with the guys we have on the big league team now and you have a hell of a rotation one way or the other...

We aren't just going to convert good starters to relievers. We'll just trade em to plug holes.

Well yes, to an extent you're right. But you also want to keep as many talented arms as possible... Put 'em to good use any way you can, trade what you need to fill a few holes. You never know which arms will work out, which won't, which ones will wear out, etc. Beinfest is right about one thing, you can never have enough starting pitching.

We should all slow down a bit.

Aside from the fact that Fernandez is a stud and Turner looks pretty good right now, there is a lot of uncertainty.

Some of these guys will end up in the bullpen and some of these guys just might not be good at all.

Just a couple of weeks ago, some people were saying that they'd like to see Eovaldi in the bullpen. While I wasn't one of those people, opinions shouldn't change based on 3 starts (3 starts that are statistically a by-product of a .176 .BABIP against if I might add).

By the time all of these guys are ready for the big leagues, this likely won't even be a discussion anymore.

The Eovaldi discussion seemed to be about how some scouts had concerns about his command and figuring he might be better suited as a power-reliever. SomethingFishy was also talking about how Eovaldi was a #1 and we pointed out that we never heard anyone think of him that highly and that many scouts felt he was a 3-5 starter or power reliever.

The kid clearly has a lot of upside, but as your point said... there's a lot of unknown factors and uncertainty about how this could go. The same can be said about nearly everyone on the Marlins so you're right... we should be patient, get a larger sample size and try to ascertain what is for real and what isn't.

I'd still like to see Eovaldi in the 'pen long term. He could easily prove me wrong and be a fixture in the starting rotation.

I'm excited to see what Henderson Alvarez has to show for the rest of the season. Given how competitive the AL East was last season I don't think putting up a 4.85 ERA is all that awful. His minor league work is a bit over the place, but he's been pitching since he was 17 years old, and at 20 years old put up an ERA under 3 in AA before reaching the majors. His K/BB ratio's have been pretty damn good his entire minor league career, and he's still ONLY 23 YEARS OLD. A mid 3 ERA in the AL East at 21 years old, that's really impressive.

I don't think it's really unreasonable to be excited to see Alvarez pitch. He's a much better prospect than originally advertised, and should be a part of the rotation for a long time. Obviously there's going to be pitchers that don't work out, but the team's traded for and drafted enough really good pitching prospects over the past two years that we should be very excited about all of our pitching depth. Heaney should be in the majors by 2015 at the latest, more likely late 2014. Descalfini is on a rate of reaching the majors very soon, and Nicolino is young but probably the best pitching prospect we have at the moment (and will likely begin in the top 20 MLB Prospects to begin next season). This doesn't even factor in that we have Fernandez, Eovaldi, and Turner already at the major league level.

The thing people should worry about is the lack of above average hitting prospects (especially a lack of power hitting prospects). Pitching wise, we're good.

well sure. I think it's just general optimism around having lots of options to battle it out.

i mean yes they could all wind up sucking (2005 draft), but at least they're not suffering from a lack of decent arms. Whether they'll be mediocre or better than average we'll just have to wait & see. Like you said, I feel with Jose and Turner that's 2 of the 5 spots to feel pretty good about long-term. But I'm happy auditioning for 3 spots between the rest of the group.

I've learned that posters here tend to get carried away by performances over an incredibly small sample size.
