November 22, 201312 yr You are right Wild Card. But, without a lot of positive additions, this is still about a 100-loss team. Wrong. We don't need a lot to avoid being near 100 losses. We need to improve and we will.

We need to improve and we will.My statement is not wrong. The Marlins will lose a lot of 3-2 and 2-1 games if they don't add significant pieces offensively. I like that Yelich will be there from Day #1, which is a positive. But, besides Stanton and Yelich, name me one good offensive player on the team. And I'm not going to give you Logan "The Next Jeremy Hermida" Morrison.
November 22, 201312 yr We don't need "a lot" to avoid 100 losses, that was my point there. If Solano/Dietrich, Hechavarria and Mathis/Brantly are in the starting lineup next year, they will lose 100 games.

If Solano/Dietrich, Hechavarria and Mathis/Brantly are in the starting lineup next year, they will lose 100 games. The only one of two players you named that will be regular starters are Dietrich and Hechavarria, and only one of those guys is going to hurt the team.

You're relying way too much on young hitters to exceed expectations. It's probably not going to happen. We've already been through this in the past.
November 22, 201312 yr I think I would take a shot on Rafael Furcal for a year. They could probably get him on the cheap since he didn't play last year.

I think due to the fact they're simply not going to pay the price for a power bat, Dietrich is going to start, whether it's second or third. I do highly believe they are searching high and low for a decent third baseman for the sole reason that they know Solano is not a starting ML player. They're not blind.
November 22, 201312 yr I hope Uribe signs elsewhere too, somebody is going to get stuck with an overpaid player there.

There's actually been no talk of this team trying to upgrade the middle infield. They like Donovan Solano, it seems.
November 22, 201312 yr They should put Coghlan at 3B and get a 2B so that maybe polly will send me another 100 bucks in 2014.
November 22, 201312 yr There's actually been no talk of this team trying to upgrade the middle infield. They like Donovan Solano, it seems. Exactly my point. They want to acquire a third baseman so they can keep Dietrich at second and move Solano out of the lineup to the bench, where he belongs.

November 22, 201312 yr I hope Uribe signs elsewhere too, somebody is going to get stuck with an overpaid player there. Uribe is going to get paid, as he and Michael Young are the two best 3B on the free agent market right now.

I have links that say the Marlins are likely to play Dietrich at third or second. The likely assumption is that the only way he would play third is if the team doesn't acquire someone else to play third, suggesting to me he is the likely second baseman in 2014.

November 22, 201312 yr No need to improve the middle infield? Is that a joke? Ask the front office. Have you seen any rumor implying that they're trying to improve 2B/SS? As of now, it just seems like they want a 3B (and not a good one either) and, to a lesser extent, a 1B (but they're fine with Morrison, worst-case scenario).
November 22, 201312 yr Dietrich needs to improve his plate discipline is he's ever going to hit over .220. I believe his past suggests he will improve, and he provides much needed power.
November 22, 201312 yr Dietrich needs to improve his plate discipline is he's ever going to hit over .220. I believe his past suggests he will improve, and he provides much needed power. What past? He's had terrible plate discipline throughout his minor league career for the most part. And while he has above average power, I think you're overrating that aspect of his game quite a bit. Don't be fooled by his time in the big leagues last year because his 16% HR/FB ratio is likely unsustainable. A one-dimensional 15-20 HR hitter is not all that valuable. Defensively, he has Dan Uggla-like range.

You still haven't explained why this is true other than the fact that his minor league career numbers are better than what he did in the majors last season.
November 22, 201312 yr really the only thing that was better was his batting average, and it's tough to count on that transferring to the bigs. At least the power looks like it'll show. I'm at little curious to see how he'd look at 3b. Coming up as a shortstop his arm is fine and the iffy range probably wouldn't hurt as much at third.
