Justin Twine signs

Featured Replies

The Twine sign sounds like something Lil Wayne would use in one of his rap songs just because.

There was a player in the draft with my surname - "so what?" you ask, well, it's an uncommon surname. He got selected in the 20th round, but by the Blue Jays.

Twine will tie them into knots at 2B or SS. So to speak. Or so we might hope.

He seems to be a talented athlete, maybe he'll work out.

Meanwhile, speaking of his namesake in terms of some totally off-topic esoterica, the last time I drove by the world's largest twine ball in Darwin, Minnesota (pop. 300, no traffic lights) on Highway 12 in about 1974, the ball was sitting in the guy's front yard, maybe 75 yards off the highway and it looked like this:

The first time I saw it I thought "Hmm, that's a BIG friggin' ball of twine. Weird. Why would anyone do that?" Today, I'd think that whoever rolled it better hope that some kid doesn't come by with a can of spray paint or a butane torch.

The guy who rolled it (since 1950 or 1953, accounts vary) died and the town of Darwin wound up with it (no pun intended) in 1989 and they turned it into a tourist trap, complete with gift shop:

And now it looks like this:

Safe from spray painting and/or torching.

Considering that the thing weighs about 20,000 pounds and the name of the town that it's in, it would have been more Darwinian if it had rolled over and crushed him at some point. Better story, too.
