September 2, 201511 yr Too soon to make such a sweeping judgement on Kolek, but agree with your statement in general in that marlins FO iz stoopid He's got the fastball and...the fastball. That's got "reliever" all over it. He could still learn a new pitch, he's young, but still it's not looking good.

He's 19...Jose was a fricken prodigy with his development... It's still too early to jump to any conclusions is all I'm saying. If he hasn't made any progress this time next year than sure. And don't get me wrong, I think Kolek was a really bad pick especially with Rodon and Nola still on the board.

The draft (especially first round) has kinda evolved. If you cant hit on the first round pick (barring injury), you are doing something wrong with all the advanced scouting. The whole, 'it's a crapshoot' mindset when it comes to round 1 is antiquated thinking in 2015 for the majority of front offices. I mean its one thing to go a bit cheap on your first round pick if you use that money on picks later in the first 10 rounds. Its another when its for your pocketbook.

Just saying, it's way too early to give up on Kolek. I think Kiley from fangraphs (who I respect a lot more than any scouting people the marlins have) had Kolek as his 5th best SP in that draft fwiw

September 2, 201511 yr a team like the marlins cannot afford a project at this point. thats kinda the problem with the whole philosophy of the organization, whatever the fuck that is. It was a terrible senseless pick for an organization bereft of starting pitching, absolutely.
September 2, 201511 yr At the time they did still have Desclafani and Nicolino, to be fair, but ya, Rodon was the clear pick.
September 3, 201511 yr At the time they did still have Desclafani and Nicolino, to be fair, but ya, Rodon was the clear pick. I get Nicolino, but what the fuck would Desclafani have to do with anything? He wasnt a top prospect and nobody ever considered him a top of the rotation pitcher or even mid rotation pitcher. (unless those morons in the Marlins system thought so) Descalafani should have never factored into who was and wasnt picked in the draft.

I meant to add Heaney in there too and anyone who followed Desclafani in his time in our minor league system could tell he was gonna be a quality mid to back of the rotation starter or a great reliever. The fact the marlins gave him up for 3 months of Mat Latos pisses me off. Everything about Deslafani showed he was at the very least a good back end of the rotation guy.

I'm really more upset over the fact that the marlins valued nicolino over heaney. Shows where their development/scouting is at.
September 3, 201511 yr Rodon was always mentioned as a possible #1/2 at worst. Heaney was always a #2/3 and I guess Nicolino was a good #2 at some point. Logically none of those other prospects should have stood in the way of drafting a rodon. I mean even with Jose Fernandez, it shouldnt stop you from drafting a potential impact pitcher like Rodon, but thats another story. Shows you how they have no fucking clue how to run a draft (or really an organization)

His first 200+ pro innings he put up some very nice k #s for his age. Actually it's really when he became a marlin is when his k #s utterly tanked. Probably not a coincidence

Shows you how they have no fucking clue how to run a draft (or really an organization) Isn't that the great debate for every draft in every sport? Do you draft what you (perceivably) need or whoever has the most talent? In this case, it looks like the Marlins botched both of those, because while they drafted what they needed (it seems), they didn't even draft the best guy at that position. Yeah, they got a pitcher, and they value pitching, but didn't even fully commit to that idea.

Yeah, they got a pitcher, and they value pitching, but didn't even fully commit to that idea. MLB draft isnt like any other draft. General rule of thumb is you dont draft for 'need' you are supposed to draft whom you perceive the best talent. Its why them extending Meek is quite hilarious.

Needs may change in the interval.
September 4, 201511 yr The Marlins didn't draft Kolek because of a need or anything. They probably factored in cost and liked Kolek because of his raw stuff. I think that most scouts saw him as one of the best arms in the draft but was basing that mostly on his velocity. He was a project from the beginning and I personally think it's dumb to take on that kind of risk for the #2 overall pick.
September 5, 201511 yr TRADE HIM FOR CHAPMAN the problem is the reds pitching coaches will teach kolek how to actually pitch and then he'll become an ace
September 5, 201511 yr TRADE HIM FOR CHAPMAN that requires the reds to desire a kolek. let me re-iterate this yet again, THE MARLINS WILL NOT TRADE FOR CHAPMAN UNLESS YELICH IS INVOLVED IN THE TRADE* *or a player with a similar talent level as yelich
