Kolek

Featured Replies

Here is a BA article on Kolek that I thought I would share.  It's surprisingly positive.  I say that because just following his minor league stats you wouldn't have guessed that he is progressing so well.  It explains why his #'s aren't great but also why he is making great strides.  It's a good read.

Really nice article actually. Gives me confidence to ignore the stats for now..Gotta remember not every pitcher can be Jose

Like Domingo German, who some on here were saying would be the next Jose. :lol

Note - he hasn't thrown a single pitch this year.

So maybe they were right.

Article nails it on the improving curve. It was terrible at the start of the year -- really flat, barely moved whatsoever. It's looked better with every outing. He needs to stop trying to throw the ball as hard as he can when he throws the heat and work on getting it in for strikes. He is starting to do that too by the looks of him in his last start. He was throwing more of the 95 MPH variety instead of the 100+ variety.

Dude is gonna be a good major leaguer if he can get his command settled then start ramping it up to the triple digits again. If he keeps and improves more on the curve, he's going to be ace material.

This article makes me feel so much better about the pick.  Why couldn't we get the 2nd pick the year Bryant was in the draft?

I don't know if this is sarcasm or not. I assume it is. German is still cool, just nobody knew he needed Tommy John (or the Marlins did and didn't tell anybody, thus being skeezy yet genius). There's a lot of guys I wish we didn't trade away this offseason, namely Barnes/Wallach/German/Canha/Flynn. That's a lot of depth that we can never get back.

I forgot what this thread was originally about. Oh yeah Kolek. While we could totally use Rodon right now I'm willing to be happy and see Kolek develop. Still like him as a prospect and think he can be cool, just will take a lot of time.

Not getting results would be one thing.  But he has had way too many walks and nowhere close to enough strike outs for a guy known for his stuff coming out of high school.  very concerning but he is obviously still young.  hopefully jupiter helps him out a lot next year.

He was known for a fastball, not really his stuff. He was a one pitch pitcher when drafted. He was always going to be a project.

the marlins wouldn't have drafted him if he only had a fastball.  his fastball also has been down velocity wise this year as well.

Meanwhile first round "busts" Colin Moran has been heating up hitting .462 in his last ten games with 3 HR's and Skippy hit bombs in six of his last nine games, can't wait to throw Naylor on the list of wasted picks!

Not sure why you have busts in parentheses.  Moran sucks and skip worth is awful

It's too early to judge him but I think this guy will be listed on another busted players in Marlins draft history.

Before AS : 4-3, 4.74 ERA/opp. avg .265/whip 1.49

After AS : 0-7, 4.10 ERA/opp. avg .253/whip 1.59

Per a game, he has pitched just over 4 innings. Nothing impressive.

But he's the Marlins top prospect!?!?! Marlins FO, could have had Rodon or Nola if they wanted pitching, hell Schwarber, Conforto for offense, guys already Show ready, but somehow screw up the #2 pick, should make for an interesting draft next year!

BTW Moran still hitting right at .300 for his career, finding some pop in AA

The marlins have had some pretty terrible first rounders (mainly because they're too cheap to spend slot value). Moran sucks and think of all the guys the fish could have had over him as well. I forgot Nola went after Kolek too. Goddamn this fuckingFO

He might not be a bust yet and we will see how jupiter and maturity treats him next year but he has been horrible for a number 2 pick.  If you're not gonna have a low ERA at least throw strikes and have something positive.  He has a bad ERA, has no control, isn't striking out many, and is giving up a shit ton of hits.  Another year like this and he is a huge bust.

The fact we didn't go Rodon drives me insane and it was painfully obvious at the time of the decision.

If Kolek sniffs the Majors, it'll likely be as a reliever. Carlos Rodon, meanwhile, could be a solid #2 starter for years to come.

Too soon to make such a sweeping judgement on Kolek, but agree with your statement in general in that marlins FO iz stoopid
