Great article... it's interesting to think the contract extension he can get this upcoming offseason compared to last season. Gotta say that was a good gamble on his part to turn down the offer last offseason. Anyone think he can slip into the All Star debate? Maybe at least be a Final Vote candidate?

I believe Peralta is leading the vote and Crawford is having a better year so I doubt it.

After what happened last year with Mcgehee and Carpenter I don't trust final voting. I definitely think Hech is having an all star season and I'm still voting for him everyday

Stanton and Gordon will probably be there. Considering the team's record, a third All-Star is unlikely especially since there are more deserving guys. If he keeps it up, Ramos might be deserving.

Didn't know he had already signed a 4-year 10M deal with Toronto. Makes me understand why he gambled & turned down the Marlins extension

Gotta give the FO credit for Hech. They continued hammering out that Hech was an all-star type SS, while his national perception was that of a below-average player. Their loyalty has paid off so far.

This is true but I also don't think they knew this for certain. He could have stayed being shitty for the next four years and they'd have kept saying that he was gonna come around. In this case I think they got lucky that he matched their prediction.

Guys, I've been as impressed by Hech as anyone, possibly even more so since I had such low expectations. I mean, he's put up more WAR already this season than in the remainder of his career BY FAR, so he's definitely having a great year. That being said, let's let him sustain it throughout the season before we go anointing the front office as geniuses and Hech as a perennial All-Star.

Great season? Absolutely, no doubt about it. But it's June 5th.

To be fair, he also showed significant improvement last year, and his numbers are finally starting to reflect his slick defense. While it's certainly early, I absolutely do not think it is out of the realm of possibility that he is developing into an All-Star caliber shortstop.

He absolutely did show improvement last season, but he was still a liability both offensively and defensively, grading out negatively in both categories. This season though? Good enough offensively to not be a liability and actually excellent defensively. Imagine the season he'd be having if he hadn't gotten off to such an incredibly slow start. He may be on his way to becoming an All-Star SS, but he isn't there yet, in my opinion.

I'm just happy that he's above average SS.

Also, great story on him. Love the humanization of hech!

He has an older brother called 'Alien' ?

What, when he was born did he burst out of his mom's stomach?

Spend five minutes in Miami and you'll hear far weirder Cuban names than Alien.

The thing about his offense is that while the results have improved, the process hasn't really.

He's walk and strikeout numbers are basically at his career rate (BB/K is actually slightly worse). While his ISO is higher, that mostly has to do with a couple of wall scraping home runs - he's not actually hitting the ball harder. Meanwhile, his BABIP is 50 points above his career average.

ZiPs has him as having the same exact OPS as last season the rest of the way out (.664). I think that's pretty fair.

More importantly is the defensive numbers finally matching the eyes. That's what makes him valuable.
