He doesn't make our team worse, so it's not the worst thing that could happen. If you look at it another way, if Cespedes = Ozuna then we'll basically be paying this salary to whatever pitcher we get in return for Ozuna. More than likely it's a dumb move, but our team should be better as a result.

He does make our team worse because he will limit funds the team could use on things that they actually need

To me it isn't even so much about does Ozuna deserve to go, is Cespedes gonna be good, which Cespedes will we get, is Ozuna better than Cespedes, etc...

To me its just that we have a need at starting pitching and the money that should be used for that will be used to get an overpriced offensive free agent. That's killing me.

Same

The analytics people should quell some of Loria's love for Cespedes and hatred for Ozuna. Let's hope they're enough.

I hope so, but Loria seems pretty set on getting Cespedes. We all know how much Loria loves RBIs

I mean, if we could trade Ozuna for a solid SP, sign a 2nd quality SP, and then sign Cespedes to replace Ozuna... I'd like that. But I just don't see that happening here. I feel like it'll be get Cespedes, ignore the SP, and then we're done.

The kind of SP we'd get for Ozuna is Bauer...I like Bauer but he's got a lot of fleas and is no way in hell a  #2

Unless payroll goes up further than expected, there is zero chance they could sign a quality SP and Cespedes

Is it true that the Marlins are hoping for an 80 million dollar payroll? If it is, I don't see how they can really add anyone at all when you factor in the increase in arbitration numbers for the existing players.

85-95 is the current plan which like everything could change (in either direction). Don't expect all the existing players to necessarily return either.

There's a lot of arbitration guys this year. If several don't return then there's also more potential holes to be filled there. What a mess. There's too many questions/needs and Loria is avoiding them and going after other needs.

Yeah no kidding

Michael Hill: "Ok Jeffrey, we've spoken to our new analytics department and to every key voice in the front office... our realistic needs are starting pitching, a platoon partner for Bour, a deeper bench, locking up our arbitration guys, and potential extensions for Gordon and Hechavarria."

Jeffrey Loria: "Excellent. So that solves it, we'll go after an overpriced bat and offer an extension to Stanton. Any chance we can get the taxpayers to help us build a second ballpark?"

Miamibaseball would be a better owner. Where is he by the way?

But if Loria won't spend long-term on a pitcher anyway, that point is moot. This is no ordinary owner :(

I guess as Marlin fans we kinda have to ask ourselves... Is it better for us to spend money on a Cespedes-type (overpriced offensive free agent) or to not spend any money at all. I could be wrong, and the offseason is obviously still early but that just seems like the two options here.

At this time, yes. It won't be Cespedes or Price. it'd be Cespedes or well nothing but Fister types probably.
