July 31, 20169 yr Per fangraphs: 2013: 2.7 2014: 2.3 2015: 2.3 2016: 0.2 So why did they acquire a starter with a 0.2 WAR this season and is going to be a free agent? They should just get Edwin Jackson back if they want a starter with that productivity.
July 31, 20169 yr Per fangraphs: 2013: 2.7 2014: 2.3 2015: 2.3 2016: 0.2 mine comes from baseball almanac. shows you how much WAR sucks as a real stat, tbh. point is he has sucked last year and this year, except for the last 3 starts when i guess he decided he should try harder to get the fuck out of dodge (and get a get out of jail free card, aka no QA)
July 31, 20169 yr Fangraphs Pitcher WAR is heavily based on FIP. I trust FIP when it comes to evaluating future success.
July 31, 20169 yr Per fangraphs: 2013: 2.7 2014: 2.3 2015: 2.3 2016: 0.2 Baseball-reference has him 3.3 bit of a difference from that 7.5 idk who's right, wrong, just sayin'

July 31, 20169 yr So why did they acquire a starter with a 0.2 WAR this season and is going to be a free agent? They should just get Edwin Jackson back if they want a starter with that productivity. Maybe because the Marlins defensive runs saved is hovering around +14 and the Padres are hovering around -18? What available starter should the Marlins have acquired and with what pieces?

July 31, 20169 yr You have to decide what you prefer ERA+(baseball-reference) or FIP(Fangraphs). Personally I'll take FIP because it is a better predictor of future success.
July 31, 20169 yr The baseball-reference stat is better. At some point, the sample size is telling and things like quality of contact matter. Some pitchers are capable of pitching better than their advanced metrics & some are worse, and Cashner seems to be the latter. Cashner is honestly very similar to Eovaldi. Someone mentioned that earlier in the thread (forgot who).

July 31, 20169 yr "Cashner sucks because he has a 0.2 WAR this year" - Idiots "Cashner's last 3 starts don't mean anything" -Idiots
July 31, 20169 yr Yes and no. At the surface maybe, but when evaluating a guy like cashner who has had big league success by either metric you have to see what changed. This year his slider has been a bad pitch, without an effective slider he is a bad pitcher. The reason you should be some what curious is his slider has been better over his last few starts.
July 31, 20169 yr I think Cashner could do well (better than he was in SD this year overall) over his 10 starts with the fish, still don't like the trade though.
July 31, 20169 yr For the record though, I prefer Rea. Rea has a cutter that I love. If he can spot and change speeds between his three fastballs and use his curveball as an out pitch he could be solid if not great #3. That is why tonight (up until the injury) was a great sign. Remember Jim Benedict has been getting a lot out of mid season acquisitions for the last few years.
July 31, 20169 yr Maybe because the Marlins defensive runs saved is hovering around +14 and the Padres are hovering around -18? What available starter should the Marlins have acquired and with what pieces? WAR aside he's having a shitty season. The issue here isn't about how WAR is calculated. By any measure he's not performing well. That makes this a bottle so smart trade.
July 31, 20169 yr The trade sucks because the Marlins got cash back. Unequivocally sucks. That's just classic Loria and will never change as long as he's calling the shots. But I think they made the only move they could to improve the 2016 Marlins with incredibly limited options. Cashner will be better with this defense behind him.

I'd say it's a lateral move at best and giving up Capps is criminal.

There is no debating the starting rotation needed help. It needed help before Chen went down with an injury. So I ask again........ What available starter should the Marlins have acquired and with what pieces?
