Analysis: Marlins Acquire Cashner and Rea

that's pretty close to what most of us are feeling i think.

If they're our 4 and 5, who's three of Urena and Koehler?

I'm guessing Don goes hot hand and goes with Urena. Koehler to pen. At least I hope.

underwhelming deal to say the least.  Capps was my favorite Marlin to watch last year because he was THAT dominant.  I wouldn't have given up on who was potentially the single best reliever in all of MLB (if he was able to keep up his delivery and MLB didn't change the ruling on his unique hop-step delivery).  It's a lot of big "ifs" so I can see where they came from in making the trade but if it's me, i still wouldn't have made this trade as it seems mostly lateral to me in terms of what we'll get out of it.

unfortunately, next year we'll really be in an even shittier spot if we need to pick someone up at the deadline.  I don't really give a crap about Naylor or Castillo either but i don't see this being "the deal" that gets us over the hump which was why I was mostly in favor of rolling the dice with Urena and Cosart this season and going into next year now that we had a better idea of what we really need to compete and go deep.

And once again Marlins management shows they have no clue what they are doing.

they gave it a shot i guess.  if they hadn't gotten anyone the casual "fan" would have said they didn't care since the casual fan probably thought they could get Chris Sale for Capps + some prospect alone.

Would have rather them not give it a shot and keep Capps. Waaaaaay over paid for pitchers that don't improve the team at all.

Also, I looked at the minor league numbers of Guerrero, the minor league pitcher coming here. He has been consistently bad in the minors.  Why?

Hard-thrower. Benedict project.

Overall analysis

Marlins no better then they were before after this trade just a shittier minor league system now and potentially weakening bullpen for next few years with loss of Capps.

Mike Hill needs to be fired!

We're just all scared cause this is the first time we've made a real push for the post season. News flash!!!! Our farm system sucks. Even with Naylor! If this pays off. My god do I hope it pays off. We will have a real chance to play baseball in October.

Cause it's not like we have the best bullpen ever right now.  Good analysis A+.

If the Marlins made no moves prior to the deadline to improve their dire starting pitching situation this board would have spontaneously combusted.  Don't be delusional and think we could get Hellickson, Pineda or Sale.

In a historically brutal pre-deadline starting pitching market, the Marlins went out and improved their starting rotation (did you watch what Urena did tonight?) and 85% of the board hates what the FO did. Keep in mind, there's a chance that Chen is done for the season. The Marlins went out and got 2 starters WITHOUT LOSING ANYONE WHO WOULD HELP THEM END A 13 YEAR PLAYOFF DROUGHT THIS YEAR

Fernandez

Conley

Cashner

Koehler

Rea

is better than what they had on Thursday

***** <-------------------Huge Carter Capps fan btw.  :(

The more I think about this trade, the less I like it.

I am in total agreement giving away Capps and Cosart...They would need to sign Cashner  to an extension for this trade to almost break even...One thing about it if the Marlins don't make it to the Series Hill will lose his Head on this one

He wont though. He's Loria's puppet.

Barely better. That's the only issue.

Even if it is barely better, a couple games could. be the difference. And I believe it's more than barely better. Cashner and Rea are capable of being much better than what we had. We had to go for it. Starting pitching is the only way to upgrade this team. We paid the price in the current market.

We added two starting pitchers,, one who could be in our rotation for years, and minor league arm with potential. With or without the cash, no chance of getting this deal done without Capps. Naylor and Castillo are not even top 100 prospects.

Those defending the trade are mostly making assumptions that Naylor and/or Castillo will be busts in the bigs if they make it.  And that CC won't be able to return to form. All while assuming Rea and Guerrero will end up being great.

Free to have an opinion but that's an awful lot of stuff that would need to happen.  We made the Padres pay Cashner's deal and if you think that's not a factor, it is
