Analysis: Marlins Acquire Cashner and Rea

Featured Replies

There is no debating the starting rotation needed help. It needed help before Chen went down with an injury.

So I ask again........

What available starter should the Marlins have acquired and with what pieces?

If they don't have the pieces you stay put instead of acquiring someone who isn't much of an upgrade.

Next season is going to sting with Capps gone.

Making a move just to make a move is idiotic. This is one of the most desperate trades I've seen the Marlins make.

To be fair, next year probably isn't going to sting just because Capps is gone.

We only had Capps for like 80 innings anyway, and we would pay him something like 15 million dollars and those innings are best case. It is a loss, but criminal idk.

Naylor might never develop power. If he doesn't he isn't a major leaguer.

Cosart sucked.

Castillo was being rewarded for a pitcher friendly park.

Rea has a lot of stuff to like, but he might never put it together.

Cashner could (see slider comment) be a solid pitcher right now.

Third guy throws hard with movement, you can decide how you feel about him.

I'm not in love with the trade but it wasn't a bad trade.

Maybeven not just that but it will be a pretty noticeable holes especially if he puts up all star numbers.

I'm fine with giving up Capps if it netted an arm that was actually an upgrade.

This is a lateral move at best.

Capps won't pitch till mid-june best case. He throws hard so I wouldn't have expected him back till July. Capps will not be an all-star next year. Not enough innings.

I don't like the value we got in return either, but our bullpen should be just fine next year without Capps.

Also, maybe it's possible that the front office sees Capps as injury prone moving forward. We all hated letting Henderson Alvarez go, but it seems like they were right about that.

This is the only thing I thought about in trying to rationalize why they traded Capps, but for Capps, it's just TJ. He should be fine.

Alvarez had shoulder AND elbow issues, and he's a starter.

Capps also has a very unique delivery that many thought was a disaster waiting to happen.

Yeah it's dumb to say that the Marlins were wise to trade Capps because he's an injury risk.

His value is low right now. The smart thing to do is to hope he regains it.

Given the volatility of relievers, there's absolutely a need for someone like Capps.

capps should be ready early in 2017 tbh, barring any setbacks.

Hard throwing lefty, with a strange delivery. I'm thinking 15 months

he throws right handed.

and relievers dont take as long to come back due to not having to build them up stamina wise.

Right right.

And they don't? I figured the rule was 12-18 months. He had it in march

Well yeah, I wouldn't have made the trade personally.

Just saying I think the pen will be fine next year with or without him.

My hope, however, was to keep Capps & sell high on Ramos. I still hope they sell high on Ramos in the offseason at least.

Rodney is like 100 YO I just want him to be good this year. I could care less what he does next year

I hope you aren't too confident that Rodney is good next season.

I think he'll be fine. Even if he's not, I think Barraclough has the best stuff in the pen currently and will eventually end up closing. Wittgren has looked fine too, Ellington has high-leverage stuff, Phelps has had a good season overall...

It's a pretty deep bullpen. Should be the least of the team's worries. The starting rotation, on the other hand, is a different story.

Rodney is still throwing mid-90s with a very good changeup. Some people on here act like he sucks because he allowed some runs. He still has swing and miss stuff and is an effective reliever. He won't necessarily just die because he's turning 40.

I think some people here don't quite grasp how small of a window this team has to make the playoffs.

The 2018 Marlins will win 68 games.

Andrew Cashner's brief stint in Miami is off to a good start.

6 innings, 0 walks and 1 earned run.  And the dude runs out ground balls like a mofo.

What happens in 2018? The core is still there and a few of them in their prime. There's actually some FA SP in 2018 as well
