No they're not but having a career .197 hitter as your backup catcher isn't a great idea. If you can upgrade from that you probably should. Mathis is literally one of the worst hitting players of all time.

Seems everyone didn't think it's a big lose for us.

 

 

Bench needs a BAT that can catch. Mathis is a career under the Mendoza line hitter. I was happy seeing a pitcher not name Jose Fernandez up to bat than him.

The players are referencing his presence in the clubhouse.  It was a tight group last year especially after the tragedy.  You can't blame the players for praising their buddy.  As fans we have the luxury of not getting emotionally attached to all of the players, especially the ones that can't hit but for the players it's different.  It's a brotherhood in the clubhouse.  At least for the teams with good chemistry.

Its not that I don't understand...its just that whatever he was providing wasn't translating into wins. The players will be fine, and the team will hopefully win more with a backup catcher who can bat his weight.
