WHO MIGHT BE ABLE TO REPLACE HOLLANDSCRAP?

Featured Replies

Hollandsworth hasn't earned his 1.5mil (or whatever it is he signed on for)..He is abyssmal at the plate...If the Marlins are still in contention in another month or so and they are serious about winning....Who would qualify as a suitor to replace TH?...or should someone be promoted from the Farm???

I honestly think they need to have a Plan B at LF..Williams is not every-day and Banks is struggling at the plate....

question.

At this point I think my grandmother is a viable candidate to replace Hollandsworth :D

All kidding aside, what about Abraham Nunez?? Last I heard he was playing pretty well in the minors, and he certainly couldn't hurt our team any more than Hollandsworth. He could play CF and we could move Pierre to LF for throwing purposes. Probably won't happen but it definately wouldn't hurt. Anyone know what happened to millar??

a replacement in left field for hollandsworth could be robert stratton, chad allen, or abe nunez. i dont think g.williams is an every day starter.

you take your pick but i'm not ready to bench him yet.

1. he's battin a decent .250 ( compared to alex gonzalez .200 season when he was down in the .180's i dont see it so bad. i mean yea he isnt hitting great but dont bench the guy yet.)

2. hollandsworth plays tremendous defense over in left field. he hasnt made an erro yet he is doing fine.

3. he was never a 30-100 GUY. EXPECT NO MORE THAN .270 15 hr's and 50-60 rbi's

4. those numbers above arent pretty good for a number 8 hitter.

just wait it out and give him a chance.

but cyggy....

when asking the question next time to make it stand out more make it like this...

question

There has to be a suitable replacement though.

J-Rod,

my concern is about in another month or 2...

maybe I should re-think my question as follows:

Should the Marlins make a trade before the July dead-line to bolster offense from the LF position if Hollandscrap doesn't improve? Or bring up from the farm system?

question

Seriously, if Hollandscrap would at least make his outs count by advancing runners or something, then great his hits will be bonuses...But, right now HE BRINGS NOTHING TO THE PLATE ....wasted at-bat/rally killer

Its very hard to answer to answer a question about July in April. The answer will be much clearer then based on how bad the situation is in LF then and where we are in the standings.

there's no right or wrong answer here, voice your opinion!

I think they should at least have someone ready to go in case TH really gets worse...It's like PW syndrome again except PW occasionally got lucky and launched one when he wasn't striking out

JROD-

I think just looking at the stats for Hollandsworth sells our point short. I would certainly be willing to accept .250 from him considering the alternatives, but he is giving us no productivity. When he's not striking out (which seems like 90% of the time) he is hitting into a DP. He can't move runners over, and he's gotta be like 0 for 10 (with 10 k's) with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 out. He also has no clue how to bunt.

He helps us on defense, but he at least has to accomplish the little things at the plate for us. I would go for Banks over Hollandsworth right now. At least he can make contact in key situations. I would not be surprised to see Holly lose his spot (temporarily) within the next couple of games if he does not show improvement.

  • Author

I agree, give Banks a few starts...he might raise his average with more consistent at-bats instead of coming in late for 1 at-bat..tough to get a rhythm going there..and Banks can make contact

I remeber when some of us were posting that the LF job should go to whoever playing best and at the time it was Abe Nunez. Most of TH supporters were quick to respond on TH side.

Again if Nunez could hit....

He is the starter.

But I dont know what the hell is the current situation with him.

Right now, I try out what you currently have on your roster, that would be

Brian Banks

Its still too early to think about cutting someone and/or making a trade. This is really your most logical solution.

Answer

ah, what the hell...

just sign Rickey.... he'll get the job done in the 8 hole

TH should play against righties with Banks/Williams picking up some AB's against lefty starters. Holly's numbers versus left-handers is atrocious.

The reality of the situation is that Holly will be getting the majority of AB's as our LF. Hopefully, some hard work with Bill Robinson will result in a dramatic improvement at the plate.

I remeber when some of us were posting that the LF job should go to whoever playing best and at the time it was Abe Nunez.

when was this??

I was in favor of Hollandsworth starting this season over Nunez, yes. But that was before this terrible start. Also I was in favor of keeping Al Martin and possibly platooning him with Todd after the spring that Martin had. Nunez had already shown he couldn't hit. I'd like to see Banks get some starts. Maybe platoon him with Hollandsworth if this keeps up. Maybe Banks needs to start a game or two to get his swing going, some guys just don't hit off the bench well...

Well said Hotcorner.

Banks showed a lot of promise in Spring Training and deserves a chance. The thing that has bothered me has been when Gerald Williams has started over Banks. Williams should be a defensive replacement and the personal pinch runner for Redmond/Castro - nothing else.

The Marlins should Release Williams and call up Nunez.Give Brian Banks some playing time if that doesnt just try Abe Nunez.

Abe Nunez is a bust. He hasn't picked up a bat since he strained his hamstring early in Spring Training.

Forget about him for the foreseeable future.

I would really give Hollandsworthless a few more weeks to get his act together. In the meantime, play Banks a little bit more. Allen and Stratton can be good to this team. Gerald Williams is only good as a pinch-runner. Right now we have 3 catchers with Pudge starting almost everyday, Redmond getting rusty because of his few at bats (yeah, yesterday he had a pinch-hit), and Castro relegated to pinch-hit duties. Because of this we only have 11 pitchers, and from our 6 relievers 1 is having a nightmarish start (Nu?ez), another has mechanical problems (Neal), another cannot pitch everyday (Almanza), another is said to have some mild form of tendinitis (Sponeey), another gives up a run everytime he comes out (Tejera), and the last one is the closer Looper, who hasn't had that many save situations to actually get into a rhythm (except yesterday that he SO 4).

Something has to be done to improve this bullpen besides getting Hollandsworthless to hit consistently don't you think?

Maybe would could give Geral williams and Banks a try. If it doesnt work we can bring up one of our prospects thats an outfielder....but i would Give Williams a chance first.

At Least he is making progress:

Hollandsworth makes progress at plate

Before Wednesday's game, manager Jeff Torborg said sometimes all it takes to get a guy turned around is an infield hit.

Left fielder Todd Hollandsworth has plenty of those. He's looking for something a little more substantive. Hollandsworth finally got it Tuesday night, with a run-scoring double to left that gave the Marlins a 2-1 lead.

Even after that knock, Hollandsworth entered Wednesday's game hitting .118 (2 for 17) with runners in scoring position (two RBI).

"He and [hitting coach]Bill [Robinson] have been working on adjustments," Torborg said. "I like the way he's up there in more of a crouch. He really looks like he sees the ball much better now. He drove that ball down the left-field line [on Tuesday]. He didn't flip it out there."

Hollandsworth going 13 for his first 36 (.361) with the bases empty has kept his overall average hovering around respectability. As recently as April 16 he was a .298 hitter, but a 1-for-16 slump dropped him to .250 entering Wednesday's game.

In his first at-bat Wednesday, Hollandsworth reached on his seventh infield single. He started the day with the third-most infield hits in the majors behind Dave Roberts (11), Darrin Erstad (7), Juan Pierre (7) and Randy Winn (7).

ARMED AND DANGEROUS

Right fielder Juan Encarnacion is one of 10 National Leaguers that started Wednesday with two outfield assists, three behind leader Jose Cruz Jr. If Encarnacion doesn't remain among the league leaders all season, that isn't necessarily indicative of his job performance.

Reputation is sometimes enough to keep runners from advancing. Tuesday, Richie Sexson tried to score from second on a single to right. Encarnacion's throw arrived in time and on the fly.

"That's important," said Torborg, of having an outfielder who can keep base runners from gambling. "When you set up your outfield, ideally you'd like to have the big arm in right field. ... He's got a heck of an arm."

In 2001, Torborg got to see arguably baseball's best arm on a daily basis. Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero doesn't always make the most accurate throws from right, but few can match his arm strength.

"It's tough to rank them," Torborg said. "When you see a guy like Vladi Guerrero, he loves to throw. Juan is in that category."

Encarnacion had nine assists in 2002, four of which came as a member of the Marlins. His career best is 10 in 1999 with the Tigers.

PRAISEWORTHY

Brewers third base coach Rich Donnelly, who worked in the same capacity for the Rockies, was around two of the game's best players in Admin Walker and Todd Helton. The guy he most admired didn't pack the same pop.

Donnelly loves Pierre, who was with the Rockies before the Marlins acquired him in the offseason.

"He puts 62 bunts in play and beat out like 28," Donnelly said. "That's 28 hits on your average. He can do everything. This guy is a nonstop worker. In 22 years in the big leagues, I've never seen anybody work as hard as he does."

HIGH alert

In the aftermath of unruly fan behavior in Chicago and Oakland last week, Pro Player Stadium increased security for Marlins games.

Additional uniformed personnel are stationed up the baselines during inning changeovers and other breaks in the action.

Umpire Laz Diaz, the umpire accosted by a fan at a White Sox-Royals game last week, is part of the crew doing the Marlins-Brewers series.

Staff Writer Harvey Fialkov contributed to this report.

ah, what the hell...

Why in the hell would The Marlins want him if they are in contention?

The last thing ANY team in contention needs in a troublemaker and don't say he's not because from The Piece I saw on him on Real Sports their is no question that he is a cancer.

He even got a chance to defend himself and he still made an a** out of himself. Their's no doubt that he still has The Talent to at least play in The Majors but not The attitude. Who know's maybe this experience will humble him but I doubt it.

A couple name come to mind who could be had in the future

Old farts first:

1. Baltimore BJ Surhoff- good left-handed bat who can be had for a mid-level prospect

2. Cleveland Matt Lawton- is real struggling but is a good vet. another left-handed bat

3. Oakland Ron Gant- another guy real struggling but when he is on his power is very good.

4. Milwaukee John Vander Wal- great pitch hitter who in the past couple of years has become a good to average starter.

5. Pitts.Reggie Sanders- I don't know if this guy will be on the market but you never know

New Blood:

1. Chicago Carlos Lee-The Sox want to trade him because of there top prospect is ready( I forgot his name)

2.Detroit Bobby Higginson- I know I know its too much $$$$ but if you offer the right prospect for them to take most of his salary you never know

3.KC Raul Ibanez- This guy is about to break out. A sleeper hometown kid is really the offense that is driving KC early on.

4. Tampa Ben Grieves- Tampa could leave him at DH but I think he wants to play the field. Something Tampa will not do long term with Top Prospect in the OF down on the farm ready for the Majors.

5.Minnesota any of those OF they don't want to keep :D :D :D
