Attendance at the game last night was 7,003... smallest announced crowd in Marlins Park history and, if I read it right, second smallest crowd at a "normal" MLB game in the last decade. Only games with teams displaced by hurricanes and such have had smaller crowds. And yesterday was still a Mets game with all their ridiculous fans and still early in the season. Wait for a mid season, mid week Brewers Pirates or Reds game or something like that.

This I disagree with. They come back as soon as all their neighbors and coworkers are wearing Marlins gear and talking about how they can't wait for the next game they bought tickets too.

That’s totally fair, but I don’t think we need to put 2018 attendance under a microscope and have it act as a referendum on Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman.  It is already abundantly clear that none of the general populous think he has done a good job, and a decent portion of the dedicated baseball fans also feel this way.  Some people, myself included, are on board with what has transpired.   Yes, attendance has been poor this year.  But it has been poor for 20 years.  I don’t think last night’s actual attendance should be held up as some sort of example to prove a point.  That's all I was trying to say.

I myself hate to bring up the attendance because it's old news and has become just a punchline but I also think the attendance posts of the first two weeks have been "noteworthy" because of the more honest numbers being announced as well. Attendance is also supposed to be a key part of Jeter's plan too so pointing out that it isn't increasing seems fair as well.

I'm sincerely asking you this as non-confrontationally as possible: what point are you trying to convey with all this talk about an attendance problem that is pretty clear to everyone.

 

 

Here's what makes no sense and is worth talking about imo - having this type of attendance with new ownership.  It may not be shocking now, but if a year ago someone said that Loria would sell the team to a Derek Jeter-run ownership group, fans would have been thrilled.  Rebuild or not, you would assume that fans would come out to the ballpark in at least as large of numbers as they did in the Loria regime.  After all, many people said they were staying away because of Loria.

Because he dumped the entire team this off-season, that made him as bad as or worse than Loria to those people. Can you blame them?

Exactly.

 

The Pope could buy the Marlins but if the team wins 68 games the casual fans are not going to the ballpark.  And some die hard fans are going to a lot less games (I haven’t been to a game yet).
