Trevor Richards optioned to Triple A, Martin Prado reinstated off DL

Also in Frisaro’s twitter timeline he says Realmuto is leading off tonight.

You could make a case for Smith to be sent down. I thought Richards was a good candidate to stay up.  After two rough outings he pitched great against Pittsburgh, then another rough outing in Milwaukee, then a better showing in LA.  Seems like he was working through the learning curve just fine.  Considering his pedigree we shouldn’t have expected him to burst onto the scene.  More moves forthcoming with Chen and Straily heading back so his goose was probably cooked anyway.

makes sense.  He's not ready.  Let him develop more in AAA.  Peters and Merandy next to go when Chen and Straily return.

Doubt they both get optioned down because that will leave us down one pitcher and we'd have a 6 man bench. It'll be one of them and then a position player. Fingers crossed it's Brinson but it could be Shuck.

Why does Richards get demoted after a 10 K game?

because he's been largely ineffective and he's about to lose his rotation spot and isnt major league anyways.  not to mention he only threw 4 and 2/3 innings in that game anyways because he's not very good.

Wtf??? Peters has been ineffective. Richards has no third pitch and can't pitch to ANYBODY 3 times through. Richards has numbers that are interesting, and numbers that frankly make him a curious candidate to become something of value in the show. Peters has been complete and total trash. Why make this move????

You just answered your own question. He can possibly learn/improve on a third pitch in the minors so he can be a more effective starter.

But he could/is doing that in the majors? are suggesting this is a money move? Trevor Richards is going to be a pitcher commanding multiple millions of dollars a year? Okay, if that is the case, then great move. He shouldn't come up until after the deadline for him to earn an entire year of mlb service.

"Exhaust all options as a starter." That's what the Marlins did with those two. Then traded them and they were moved into the bullpen and are doing really well.

ya, they didnt do what they should have, which is move them to the bullpen when they didnt work as starters.  That doesnt mean you shouldnt exhaust all options as a starter first.

Why not send down Merandy though?

I thought this was keep Merandy up one more day in case he was needed out of the bullpen for Friday's game and then send him down on Saturday to bring back Chen. Translation: they're both getting sent down anyways but Merandy had a chance to pitch Friday while Richards did not so might as well send down Richards first. This is the way I thought of it. Of course it'll only make sense if Merandy is indeed sent down today.
