Blink and you'll miss this 101.8-mph fastball from Tayron Guerrero -- the fastest of the 2018 season

By Adrian Garro @adriangarro

April 30, 2018 at 11:54pm

Remember when Cardinals rookie right-hander Jordan Hicks threw a pitch on Opening Day that was clocked at 101.6 MPH? It was very nice:

Unhittable, too (and he hit 101.7 mph on a pitch twice in April). But while Hicks had thrown the hardest pitches of the 2018 season, he has now been surpassed ... and by another rookie, too!

The honor now belongs to Tayron Guerrero of the Marlins, who threw this rocket to Pedro Florimon in Miami's 8-4 win over the Phillies on Monday night:

Major credit to Florimon for standing in the box and taking a pitch like that. Seems just a bit intimidating.

i mean, k's and throwing fast are cool and all, but he wont be an effective reliever unless he learns how to throw strikes consistently.  Tons of guys coming out of bullpens in 2018 can throw fast, controlling it is another issue entirely.

He doesn’t have to have excellent control if he’s going to k 2 guys per inning.

if he wants to be better than an average reliever, yes he does.

There are plenty of 4+ BB/9 guys who are elite out of the bullpen because their strikeout rate is elite. It's too early to say Tayron is an elite K guy now, but all metrics early on seem to indicate that the K's are for real.

Kyle Barraclough has a career 5.58 BB/9 and he's made a nice career for himself out of the bullpen.

NEW LYRICS!!!!

"He throws a Blazing Fastball (crack whip)

He throws it really hard

His job to strike out hitters

Collect his rookie card

He dialed it up past One-Hundred and One

He blew all the batters away

He made his Blazing Fastball

A torch to light the way

When others rule the East

While the fish rebuild again

A call went out for a man with heat

To take the East in hand

They needed a man who was young and cheap

With fastballs he could barely aim

Then out of the pen rode a man with an arm

On a cart...Tayron came.., yes, Tayron was his name...

He throws a Blazing Fastball

He throws it really hard

His job to strike out hitters

Collect his rookie card

He dialed it up past One-Hundred and One

He blew all the batters away

He made his Blazing Fastball

A torch to light the wayyyyyyyyy (crack whip)
